I currently have a Vivint contract, and have actually been pretty happy with their products and service.
I am moving into a new home soon which does not have a security system installed, and I am tired of paying $70 per month for Vivint.
I am looking for advice on a home security and automation system that I could easily install myself, but pay a monitoring company a much cheaper monthly rate.
Any advice for "cutting the cord" with Vivint and getting my monthly bill down?

Vivint is a rip off. The alarm.com features only cost the dealer $10 a month and their monitoring station charges around $5 bucks a month. The equipment should be able to be used again by another dealer. Im not sure if Vivint has the panels locked out or not but usually just changing out the cellular radio and defaulting the panel usually gets around most locked panels.
If you go with another alarm company you might be able to get new equipment free with a monitoring contract. You could definitely find a cheaper monthly fee. A local guy would be pretty aggressive with pricing to take away an account form Vivint.

All the Vivint equipment will be staying in my current house, and the new house is a blank slate.
What options are out there for me to purchase all the equipment and install myself, and then just pay a company like alarm.com 10-20 a month to monitor it? I'm assuming to use alarm.com, I would have to be a dealer. Are there any other services out there similar that will deal directly with consumer?
I came across a dealer for Alarm.Com called LINK seems like this is along the lines of what I'm looking for, something where I'm not locked into a 4 year contract, etc.

The have a few out there you can purchase off the internet. They come preprogrammed and you just need to lick and stick the contacts. I'm not familiar with any of them, but they are still going to make that residual monthly income. I rather have a local guy that can come out immediately and fix problems that will come up.
With the 2gig systems you are really paying for 2 monthly services. Alarm.com does all the interactive features and automation. A monitoring station would still have to monitor it in order to send out the police\fire department etc in the event of an emergency. Like I said earlier the dealer pays $10 a month for alarm.com services and about $5 (on the high side) for monitoring. You have to have a dealer account with alarm.com in order to get service. If you could find something for $30 a month or cheaper you would be doing well. Of course if you are not interested in the alarm.com features you could get away a lot cheaper.

Hopefully nothing, I'm trying to work out a deal the buyer of my house can't pass up lol! But if I get out now it would cost me $1100

I'm going through the same process trying to determine what type of home security system to purchase. It seems there are many different options that offer additional smart home features that may or may not be useful. The problem is, each company seems to have their own system that will/will not work with other smart home products.
I have a Nest thermostat and Nest Protect smoke/CO2 alarms. I wish Nest would come out with a home security system.
My preference would be to have less sensors that have more features (entry and motion most likely) that I could install myself (wireless), good iOS app, and ready for future upgrades or service additions. I think I'm dreaming about hitting all of those items.
I had come across this company, Scout, which seemed to hit a lot of my must haves:

But, as the some of the other wireless products on the market, you are looking at $1k easily, if not more. I did like this one because there were no keypads involved, a litle more minimalist that Simplisafe.
Edit: Been looking a little more this morning. Insteon seems to have a pretty good system from what I have read. They even have a open/close sensor that you can mount within your door frame (which is a huge plus for me vs. having the external sensor mounted on the door).

Most use Zwave which are universal although the Nest Wifi.

Look into using a local (non-adt) company to install and monitor. I paid to have my system installed (install came with equipment, but equipment probably cost more than what you could buy online). I pay $20/mo for local monitoring and an extra couple bucks for an app. the app is z wave compatible and lets you control your other z wave devices. i did not sign a contract or anything for the monitoring - i could switch to one of the cheap online guys at anytime, but i have been very pleased with the local company so far.

Been trying to convince myself not to buy this-and I've been successful for a few months now-after I ran across this online...

That's not a security system. It's good if you want to check in on the dog or kids but that's about it.

What automation features are you looking for, and how important is it that they all work in the same app?
