You never go against the family...ever

yes. he was dead weight. sam carried him

nope, I would have never left him out in Vegas w/a bunch of shitbags that could easily manipulate him either.

Nah, it was a line-crossing moment for Michael. We know from The Godfather III that if Michael could do it over he would have spared Fredo.
I was always curious about whether Tom Hagen was privy to this scheme, and if so what his thoughts were. Considering he was even voting against killing Roth, I'd like to think he never would have signed off on whacking family.

No.. Really showed how far Michael had fallen into the world.. Now, if he went around telling people that fredo had betrayed the family then his hands are tied but the movie gave the impression that only he had figured it out as Michael held everything close to the vest during that time..(never read the books). Add to that, Michael knew his weaknesses and put Fredo in a very poor spot in Las Vegas. It was inevitable that he would be taken advantage of at some point

No. Michael clipped his nuts a long time before he had him whacked. He wasn't a threat anymore. He could just cut him off completely. Freezing him out was business. Killing him was personal.

Nope

No.
Would have set him up elsewhere to start a empire for me. Say Korea or Bora Bora but I'm not killing family.

Yep. He tried to kill me once. I'm not giving him another opportunity to do it again.

Yes. Fredo wasn't just weak, he was very jealous and self-centered. It would have only been a matter of time before he betrayed Michael again and may have been successful and when you're the Don you can't afford to take those chances.

I thought this thread was going to about Idiocracy.

Yes, but not until Mom died.

No. That was the beginning of the end for Michael. He lost his humanity in that move. His father never lost his humanity. Carla looked up to him. He tried to save his family but he ended up destroying it and died alone.
It was a very bad move. Even Macchiavelli would say that mercy there could be used to redeem Fredo and turn him into your strongest ally. Always know that Michael forgave him, Fredo would have been Michael's most loyal friend. It was unnecessary and weakened Michael.
Greatest movies ever. Geez. Thinking about them even now almost gives me chills. So much depth. When Neri killed Fredo and stood up in the boat and Michael is looking out the window expressionless onto the ice cold late as the sun was setting ... man, you knew that that was it for Michael. He was finished.

No. I would have put him in some meaningless position with no real authority. At worst, I would have set him up and got him some country club prison time for 5-10 years.

No, but I might have put him in some kind of institution where they would have kept him "doped up" until the day he died. Everyone else would have thought he was dead. He couldn't hurt the family in the state he'd be in. With Michael's power, it would have been easy to do back then.
Great thread by the way!

By the time he did it, there was no need
Posted on 10/10/15 at 6:07 am to DelU249
Depends, if you thought you could shut him up he'd be a great fall guy for Michael.

Michael had two options with Fredo.
Option A: Kill him
Option B: Give him about 200k and a airway coupon to anywhere he wants to go.
Option B probably sees him show back up after a few years needing more money or as ransom from a rival family.
Option A was really the only option.
