My dad caught a few of these in Grand Isle and we haven't seen these before. It looks like some type of cichlid to me.

Right off the pier

I'm trying to get more info from him, but he's not too quick to reply. I'm surprised he was able to send a picture via text. He's kinda technologically challenged.

It really looks like a Rio Grande Cichlid but I didn't think they were in a wild population in G.I.

I'm trying to get that info from him. He said off of one of his friends boat, which is a shrimping boat that stays in GI, so I assumed that's where they were. He still hasn't answered me.

if so then that's not good.
I think he's fricking with you.
I do know they're all over City ark lakes in New Orleans.

Rio Grande cichlid fo sho.

I was a puglias last week and some dude brought one in to weigh it for a state record. He caught in on a fly and it went over 1 1/2 pounds. I'm pretty sure it's illegal to throw them back and it's illegal to have a live one in your possession. This particular hipster had it sitting in a bucket of water in the back of his prius.

ETA: I found it strange that he knew what it was, knew the record weight but didn't know he was supposed to kill it. Freaking hipsters...

I saw that hipster weigh the fish in. It was for the city park Rio Rodeo. I scratched, guess that doesn't say much about me....

This hipster was most certainly weighing it for a record. He said IFGA several times. And he was looking for a certified scale. Puglias disn't have one, but they weighed it anyway.

If he was in a rodeo, I can't say.
