Are you suggesting we destroy the bridge? It's unorthodox but it just might work. I'd like to hear more about this plan of yours......

by dagrippa The problem is the bridge. It's not the number of lanes up to the bridge.
Widen the bridge or build another one next to it.
That is part of what needs to be done. There needs to be a another bridge built next to the "new bridge." That way there can be a HOV lane atleast 2 lanes of through traffic and and exit lane with shoulders wide enough for emergency vehicles to use during wrecks in both directions. I-10 also needs to be widened but that is a minimum of $1.5 billion and we are broke. Now would be a good time to raise the gas tax or find other sources of revenue to use to fix it with though.

Love how nobody had suggested traffic reduction fixes such as car-pooling instead of everyone driving their own cars into the city.
Or bus services, or trains.
You know, what other major metropolitan areas do.
Because CATS is so well run now?

How is CATS keeping you from car pooling?

I suggested a triple decker interstate with light rail on the top.

Don't believe we have the bed rock foundation to support that.
Would be a huge Jenga set with cars on it.

Both of them keep attacking trucks.
The way people in BR drive they could have 10 lanes and traffic would still be backed up.

From Jacksonville, Fl to Los Angeles, CA...I-10 goes to one lane at only one point--Baton Rouge. All for that super important Washington St. exit.
RACIST! Triggered!! RA'ed.

The Washington Street exit has nothing to do with it if you don't widen it to two dedicated lanes coming off the interstate all the way through to the split. Eliminating Washington street exit tomorrow would do nothing but push the merge down 400 feet.
The fix is installing an extra lane from the current merge off the bridge all the way to the split. If you go the to the meeting tonight at the River Center, you will hear that they plan on doing it in the space that they have. The overpass whiny people will have their businesses disrupted while they build it, but the total footprint of the interstate will not change. This will be DOTD's best attempt to make it happen and it appears the political capital is there this time.
It will not fix the entire Baton Rouge problem but will make an improvement. You will also hear that DOTD is also in favor of another bridge over the river. The problem is that number is around $850 million if I remember correctly. There is no money like that in budget in the near future.

I love having my own car to go and come as I please. I like being able to control my own destiny instead of a bus driver/train conductor/coworker controlling it. I like living in a minor metropolitan area that doesn't require i used mass transit to commute.
Your ideas may work for Houston, Chicago, NYC, etc. but it isn't going to fly here. Never has , never will. Plus, the issue isn't ONLY local drivers commuting hither and yon. Its the regional traffic passing thru BR that makes things worse.

The cost of a new bridge increases every day that we don't build it

Then quit bitching about sitting in traffic

Yes, one part of any plan should be the upgrade of I-10 to the bridge from the split.
I also agree that a second bridge parallel to the existing bridge to carry Eastbound traffic is in order and it should include lanes for emergency vehicles, etc. The existing bridge can be then modified to carry the appropriate number of lanes with shoulders.
Just fixing the problem at Washington and Perkins, etc. is just part of the solution.

Sherri LeBas, secretary of the LA DOTD, said that as of November 2013 it was not looking at widening or modernizing the I-10/I-110 interchange citing cost. Instead, the state will modernize LA 1 from I-10 to US-190 to encourage detours to the less congested Huey Long

LeBas is an idiot, Jindal crony.
Can't wait till she's gone.

they cite "cost" as to why they won't do anything about 110/10 but want to work on 190 lol

so instead of sitting in traffic on the bridge waiting to get beyond Washington St, you get to drive all the way around WBR and BR only to wait in heavy traffic from Gov't st to washington st.
great plan...
