re: Today's Advocate headline, "I-10 widening garners little enthusiasm"

horace wilkinson bridge built in 1960... it's design is outdated and it was NEVER engineered to hold that much weight on it at one time... all those 18 wheelers and traffic just sitting on it for hours each day.
eventually that bridge will collapse. BR government and DOTD have ZERO foresight. it's going to be a catastrophe.

If they built new lanes for 10 East, don't you think they would reconfigure the bridge lanes to have all 3 lanes available for eastbound traffic, instead of 1 for NB 110, 1 for EB 10 and 1 for Washington Street?
I think widening would need to begin at the Nicholson/Highland exit. You then would have 4 lanes coming off the bridge with 1 going northbound I-110 and the other 3 going eastbound.
You hold those 3 lanes all the way out to the 10/12 split.. so 2 lanes of widening beginning at Washington street. This would mean that the interstate would be 5 lanes wide in the eastbound direction from the I-110 southbound merge to the 10/12 split.
I know. Easier said than done.

I have never said we should do no infrastructure increases. I am merely saying do not expect much difference if that is your only plan. Plus the headache of construction traffic. We have to think of a modern plan.

The problem is, we don't have the money to build it. The greenlight projects have completely ruined any sort of reserve we have to fix the roads we already have.

I don't actually expect BR to do anything. Just more studies with millions going to someones brother in laws pocket etc

If space is the issue, then why is nobody talking about stacking one side of the interstate over the other? I.e, put the east bound lanes on top of the westbound from the bridge to just past College Dr.
I'm not sure the dynamics of a stack coming off the bridge. Seems like you need some space to enter and exit a stack, and while there is space going westbound, I don't know about eastbound.

Functional obsolescence does not make it structurally inadequate.
Please do not start the nonsensical rumor that the I-10 Mississippi River bridge is going to collapse.

C'mon man.

Out of stupidity, it would just create a bigger clusterfrick. A loop would alleviate probably 30% of the traffic

didn't come from me. came from a DOTD worker.

I used to be one of those, and I say that's just a bit of exaggeration.

maybe so. his point was that the bridge was never intended to hold that much weight for hours and hours at a time. it was meant to travel over. not to sit on etc.

The issue has never been the engineering
The engineering was terrible. The downramp from the bridge narrowing to one lane, terrible.
Having the main artery (I-10) with fewer lane than the spur(I110) was terrible.
The bridge entrance ramp from the East side heading west was designed wrong causing trucks major problems.
No East bound entrance ramp on Dalrymple was poor planning.
No shoulders on the old portions of the interstate was poor engineering.
building the interstate bisecting the Lakes, and downtown BR was poor planning.

The Green Light plan is a totally parishwide plan funded by sales taxes collected in EBR Parish.
No reserves were used.
Any upgrade of I-10 or I-10 requires state and federal money. There's no way EBR Parish can fund it, and besides that ;it is not a parish road but a federal highway.

by dagrippa The problem is the bridge. It's not the number of lanes up to the bridge.
Widen the bridge or build another one next to it.

the interstate system (and road/traffic system in general) in BR is pretty much abominable. It's not a mutually exclusive thing by any stretch.
I was in BR 2 weeks ago, first time in a decade I've driven around Red Stick during the work week. I was shocked. There are more people driving around BR during the day than the roads can support. Something has to be done. It was worse to me than driving thru L.A.
It made me forgive Atlanta traffic.

Love how nobody had suggested traffic reduction fixes such as car-pooling instead of everyone driving their own cars into the city.
Or bus services, or trains.
You know, what other major metropolitan areas do.

It is the only spot in the country where I-10 is one lane.
I still can't believe after all these years they haven't addressed this yet.
From Jacksonville, Fl to Los Angeles, CA...I-10 goes to one lane at only one point--Baton Rouge. All for that super important Washington St. exit.
