Since most of us live in the states and didn't grow up supporting our local club, I find it interesting to hear other folks' anecdotes for why they are fans. So what's yours?

Personally, my club team coach in middle school grew up and was friends with Ian Rush. He came for a tournament one weekend and brought a whole bunch of Liverpool gear for us kids. I knew he played professionally in England, but I had no clue who he actually was or the fact that he was one of the greatest in Liverpool history until probably a year later. I still have my old scarf.

A friend of mine was a Liverpool fan and had a game on one Monday afternoon when I was at his apartment, forgot which game it was (this was 2009ish), but they won, and I've been a Red ever since

real was the best team on Fifa 1998 and continued to buy my favorite players (ronaldo, modric, isco, bale, james, etc)

i really follow players, not teams

AC Milan has great jerseys and a bunch of guys through the years that i loved

i tried to be a toffees fan b/c of modric and then bale, but they both got sucked up into the real vortex of amazing

now i'm a "long time city fan"

Playing with United on FIFA when I was a kid, mostly. I guess I've been on the bandwagon since 2002.

My dad also had friends overseas who were big United fans, and he would watch their UCL matches whenever they were on TV.

Is this were Liverpool fans tell everyone else they are better than us.

And how they are not band wagoners with their hipster trendy pick of a team.

I chose Atletico from pes where they weren't even called Atletico Madrid it was like red Madrid or something due to lack of licensing rights I fell in love with Kun and Forlan and Simao etc... All of them under different names too had to do some research. They are still probably my favorite club to watch, although I am more for Kun than I am any club

my first taste of the champions league was when leeds went on that crazy run so i got hooked. 2002 world cup sealed the deal, then we proceeded to suck inordinate amounts of AIDS dicks.

so i still love leeds but have adopted the toffeemen of everton. i jumped on the everton train when they had that great year after selling rooney and qualified for the champions league. plus moyes and roberto are two of my favorite managers so that helps too and their is always an american connection it seems

i grew up in south tx so i always had access to t he mexican league, so i have a soft spot for cruz azul.

fell in love with river plate following the libertadores when they had that sexy arse team with d'alessandro, aimar, juan pablo angel, etc.

i support both the USMNT and scotland because my mom is from scotland. for this reason i also like hearts.

tl; dr- leeds is my favorite team but they suck walrus dick and so i have grown to love everton as well, 'murica, COME ON SCOTLAND

I don't pull for any club in particular, there are clubs that I pull against but it changes from week to week. I just want to see anarchy in the table and ppl melting when their entitlements don't arrive.

If Louisiana fielded an MLS team I would support fully as long as they branded it tastefully and didn't pack it full of Mexicans.

The 2014 World Cup was amazing. Hate waiting every 4 years. Wanted more soccer. So I needed a team in EPL. Couldn't choose Arsenal, Man U or Man City because then I felt like I'd be jumping on the bandwagon. So I picked Crystal Palace. Middle of the pack team and I've yet to meet another fan.

This thread is fricking hilarious. Bandwagon fans calling other people bandwagon or fair weather fans.

"No dude my story about how I played with them in FIFA is legit but the team having your high school colors is a bullshite reason."

You're all fair weather fans. Get over yourself.

Started to think that soccer "wasn't just for GAYS" around my sophomore year of high school (after playing FIFA a few times, of course) and started watching EPL. My dad is from Boston and I like the Red Sox so I thought it would be appropriate to root for the team that FSG had recently bought. Thought I had lucked out having a somewhat-but-not-really legitimate reason to root for a historically successful club but then the last several years happened. Such is life.

I like to follow Liverpool but I don't get the obsession some of y'all have with pulling for a team all the way in Europe. Not being a hater, it's just not for me. Also don't like having to sometimes schedule my day around watching a game at a weird time in the US. Is anyone else like this?

I like the USMNT as much as any team I root for though. College football is far and away my favorite sport to watch and always has been but I'm about as vigilant about watching USMNT games as I am Ole Miss games, although the disappointment caused by the two combined will likely make me go nuts one day.

Played soccer my whole and finally started watching after the 06 World Cup. Didn't choose a team, but my two favorite players were Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard. Once the transfer was complete prior to 07-08 season, Liverpool had become my favorite club. Have stuck with them ever since YNWA

I had sort of been a United fan because they were one of the only teams you could get on ppv back then. Then, I saw this happen. Was hooked after that.

Liverpool: Felt like starting to watch club soccer in 2010 or 2011. EPL was the easiest league to see. Narrowed a list down to 4 teams or so. Read up a bit about each club and was leaning toward Liverpool. Saw they had Suarez and that sold me. It helped that they wore red.

SKC: Decided to start watching MLS a year later. Liked their style of play and kits. Will be a AUFC fan when they start in 2017.

Gladbach: Decided to follow a German team in 2013 since I'm part German. Saw they had some history back in the day and have had a few Americans. And how could you not love a team with a name of Borussia Mönchengladbach?
