As a non-native of BR but being here for a while

There are some places I just do not get the local love for:
Fleur de Lis - it's like they just warmed up a Tony's pizza and threw it on a plate
Mike Anderson's
Pasttime
Applebee's
TJ Ribs
Can someone shed some light on the accolades these places get?

Applebees deserves the accolades in any city they are in.
Solid post.

Your fat girlfriend who gives accolades to Applebee's TJ Ribs, and Mike Andersons should realize she is in the minority.

I wasn't aware anyone actually liked Applebee's.
The two most over-rated restaurants in this entire city are Fleur de Lis and Mike Anderson's. I can get pizza that tastes just as good at other places and the place is old and disgusting inside, plus cash only? Get outta here. I know people love it precisely because it has not changed but that is not a good thing for someone who never went there as a child. Mike Anderson's is typical fried food but for twice the cost. I can not figure out how it became the go-to place in the city. When I moved here to come to LSU everyone raved and recommended it and it still seems to be one of the most recommended places to out of towners.

Fleur De Lis was nice when Junior Guercio owned it and it was a bar room or as my father would call it a saloon and they were known for strong drinks, cold beer and pinball. Pizza was then just bar food and I sat at that bar starting around 1975 while my father and grandfather sat there in the mid to late 30's.
Since he died and his daughter took it over ( quite a few years ago-like 20) it has become Chuck E Cheese.
Mike Anderson's hasn't been "go to" since late 70's early 80's. It makes it's money on game weekends from the out of towners for the most part.
Pastime is about like Fleur De Lis. An old bar that serves food and is located not far from downtown so the drunk lawyers can have a pop between dockets. Nothing more nothing less.
TJ Ribs doesn't get the love it once did when everyone was mashing their bag over baby back ribs. Not a bad place but not as much love as you might think. It blows hot and cold even on this board.
Even mentioning Applebee's allows me to discount your thread beyond Labor Day Sale price.

Given it's location, it is perhaps the most underachieving food city in America. I know this is not a popular opinion, but I have been to 17 countries and 32 states now...I feel I have a good breadth of knowledge. I have kept and open mind, but it really is just not good.
Houston is the most underrated while we are at it. Lafayette and it's environs has great food.

Where have you eaten in BR that you did like?

I actually picked a pizza up from there this past weekend after not having one for about 4 years. It was okay but I remember it being much better. Johnnys imo taste better than FDL now. I dont think Mike Andersons is bad just not spectacular. The one dish I really like there is the Quails and Tails.

OP's list vs. Trip Advisor rankings for BR restaurants(none of the OP's list are on the "Best of" for Yelp or Zomato). Not that their list is "right" by any stretch (they have City Pork/City Pork II in the 100's), but still kinda interesting to look at.
TJ Ribs - #24 (Highest rated BBQ place)
Mike Andersons - #49
Fleur-de-lis - #149
Pastime - #337
Applebees - #537
On a related note: It's interesting that the Venn diagram of "Regular citizens who write reviews for restaurants on the internet" and "People who go to Applebees" intersect at all.

Yes. Your preconceived notions regarding the general public of BR is false.

I have never known a person to go to Applebees in Baton Rouge... I've been here my whole life.
