Harris, Jennings even at QB as LSU practice opens

BATON ROUGE – LSU quarterback Brandon Harris had the team to himself throughout the summer for seven-on-seven passing drills as 2014 starter Anthony Jennings was on suspension, but that does not necessarily mean Harris gained any advantage entering the start of practice on Thursday.
“I certainly think he got more reps by far,” LSU coach Les Miles said Wednesday after welcoming 105 players for the start of practice. “How much ground he made up, I’m not certain. That will be something that we’ll look at when we get him in camp and evaluate early and late.”
...
Both quarterbacks are apparently right where they were after spring practice. “I think there’s real closeness,” Miles said at the time. “One guy hasn’t separated himself from the other, and both guys are playing much better.”
The competition starts again Friday. Asked what position on his team is the most “unsettled” entering August practices, Miles interrupted and said, “Quarterback. We’ll have to find us that starter. The good news is both guys are very talented. Both guys have had more experience than they’ve had, so we’ll be much improved. Just want to see which one.”
...
Miles was asked how much better one or both quarterbacks will need to be this season to make a difference in the close games LSU lost last year in falling to 8-5 overall and 4-4 in the Southeastern Conference – the Tigers’ worst season since going 8-5 and 3-5 in 2008. Of LSU’s five losses, three were by seven points or less.
“I think our wide receivers will be better,” Miles said. “I think our offensive line with some veterans and really talented young guys, will be better. I think if he (the quarterback) just manages the game well. If he does the things he’s capable of doing, I think he’ll be fine whoever he is

Here's where everyone freaks out even though Miles will never say one guy is playing better than the other and we all know he won't say either way and it's all just a media pony show but we like to melt so here we are melting about dumb shite things we assume

Expect Jennings to pull ahead by the end of next week.

I know we all wanted to Les Miles to come out and say "Harris is our guy"
but did anyone expect it?
it wasn't going to happen.
Les is going to at least wait and see what each QB can do.
AND he isn't going to hand the position to either of them .

Why wouldn't they be even? No one but the players have seen how either QB has improved. There is no reason for Les to come out and name a starter before the QB competition begins.

If Jennings starts we will be lucky to win 7 games

It is a trap.
FIFY When Jennings starts we will be lucky to win 7 games.

Even though the offense should be better as a whole. Improved receivers, o-line, and running game. I'll take the word of the players and coaches over any assumptions

I don't care who starts, we need a QB that prevents the opposing defense from stacking the box.
Cameron isn't working with NFL QB's here, he has to recognize the abilities of the QB's he's working with now and design effective offenses for them.
Is he able to do this? Certainly he's had enough time. We'll find out for sure next month against Mississippi State and Auburn. If either of those teams are able to stack the box on us, we need to look for another OC. Someone who can work with college-level QB's.

How structured is the summer program. On one hand, we hear that Harris got all the reps in the 7 on 7 since Jennings was not allowed to participate. Sounds very structured. On the other hand, the coaches aren't allowed to participate. Sounds like pick up practices.

This thread could end with your post but will it?
Nope

Hoping it is really like this.
Harris is way ahead of Jennings but Miles needs a backup and does not want to break Jennings spirit. Does not want Jennings to transfer. We need both this year

I hope BH finally gets a chance for quality time and demonstrates his skills.
If AJ starts, I'm hoping I can sell my tickets at a decent price. I just can't watch that crap again. When you have studs in the backfield but your wannabe QB thinks he's better and won't pitch the ball, you get what you had last year. 1...2...3...punt.

I've already told you once I'd buy your tickets. Put up or shut up.

O thank lord. I thought that they might have been uneven.

One more again...
What coaches say in interviews is not even close to what coaches say in practice, team meetings, etc.
If he wants these to players pushing each other to get better of course he'll say they're neck and neck, even if one has clearly distinguished himself from the other.
Unless anyone here watches every practice and truly knows what's up I'd take anything any coach says in an interview with a grain of salt.
