I put 40k miles on my car last year, so I can see the value in the concept. I just don't like the execution.

He isn't wrong, that's for sure. In terms of the needs of the average American the 97 7.3 we had would handle the same things my 6.7 could handle, the difference is my 6.7 caters to the American motto of "more = better". More power, more room, more go-fast, etc.

The problem with trucks is not the towing capacity. It's the ability of the truck to be able to even handle that load. Why do you need a heavy pulling truck in a mid sized?

You don't. That's why it's dumb. It's too big, costs too much, and makes too much power.

One thing not being said is the upcharge for the V-6 is @ $800, so actually bumping up to the diesel is @ 3K at most.
Why go with the diesel in this chassis?
Long term reliabilty, fuel mileage, easier on the truck in towing duties for starters.
Without towing my V-6 Colorado gets about 5 mpg better than my V-6 Tacoma got. Doesn't sound like much until you realize that it gives you 105 more miles of range out of a tank of gas. Compare that with the expected 30-plus of the diesel and you are looking roughly at another 100 miles of range out of a single tank of gas in non-towing mode.Thats over 200 miles of range per tank over the V-6 Tacoma.
If it is as good at towing and mileage as most diesels are then you are probably looking at a difference of 13 mpg (say towing a normal 18-19 ft bass boat) vs maybe 20 or so towing with the diesel.
Thats roughly 150 miles more range out of a tank of fuel than the gas version. Thats a free round trip thrown in to a lake over an hour away with the diesel motor.
Does that make it any clearer for some of ya'll.

One thing no one has mentioned is the difference it will make in mileage if you want to put a leveling kit or body lift. I want to level it and put a 1.5 in body lift, get slightly bigger A/T tire. Maybe 31-32 inch range. I did this to my Silverado and it dropped the mileage on the hwy from 20 to 16.5. I doubt there would be as big of a drop in a diesel. Over the life of the truck that would probably pay for the upgrade. Hell, I'll probably come out way ahead.

Because when you put 40k miles on a vehicle in a year and still need to haul stuff, you either own two vehicles or get something like this.
I have a 3/4 ton gasser and the fuel costs if I drove it every day even at today's prices are staggering. You're looking at a massive amount of money at 09 prices.

man I put 100 miles a day on my 2009 2500 gasser
got 250k on it now
when I bought the diesel/tranny upcharge was way too much though I shudder to think how gas money I've spent

I went from 21/24 on my rogue to 24/28 on the second tank. Only cost 5 or 6 cents more than chevron across the street.
I drive 1000 miles a month to/from work. I would like a truck that gets good mileage, that can tow my current and next boat along with all of my camping gear and family.Does such a truck exist?

I have 220k on my 6.0 gasser. It still pulls like a mule but you have to be liberal with the throttle to do it and you can hear the vacuum on the fuel tank when you do it.
My car has a 2 liter diesel and gets over 50 mpg on the interstate going 75. It will do well over 60mpg if I try to get that from it. It will also put the traction control to work if you give it the sugar from a stop.
Put that engine in a truck. It's tier 4 compliant, it gets ridiculous fuel mileage, it's relatively cheap to build, buy, and maintain, and would easily tow what a bigger V6 can. Make a value-minded small truck with a diesel and you'll have a home run.
The 2.8 cummins and small duramax belong in full size trucks that use V6's. These small trucks need smaller engines.

Good idea on the eth free; I live next to a marina with eth free and may try it in the truck just to see.
it is usually about 30cents more than the Chevron on Chef Hwy though, so it may work out to the same miles per dollar for me.
My god-neice has a newish Rogue and that thing is nice. If that size SUV towed well I would have considered one.

I actually think theres a bigger market for 6 cylinder diesels in half ton trucks than what we realize (not that people would ever realize thats all they needed). Like you said, 3/4 ton diesels are more powerful than really needed. A 6 cylinder diesel on these frames can pull most everything the average tower is going to pull, plus you'll get 10 mpg better. The diesel on these small frames doesn't have the wheelbase to really make the towing any better.

My boat weighs 1500 lbs, and that is the capacity of my Rogue(most are 1000). But add passengers, and cargo, it is over the GVWR. I have to go bigger especially because I want to move up to a 20 ft bay boat in the not so distant future.

They should be 4 cylinders in full sized trucks.
Offer a full sized truck that gets over 40mpg hwy without being a turd or costing a fortune. The engines and transmissions are here. Everything already exists, it just needs to be combined.
