Teachers have lost so much respect over the years. Half of you people claiming it's so easy would hate to deal with kids who don't care about you at all for 40k a year. Have fun!

teachers would likely whine less if the kids they were educating respected them and or they were paid the wage they deserve.

Maybe because like Cops, teachers feel a sense of power over other peoples kids that they neither deserve nor earn.
Their job is to teach kids a subject. Not diagnose their mental health, comment on their private home life, and bitch about the ones who don't want to be there.
They CHOSE this job. I don't feel empathy for them at all.
Now with that said, I respect the hell out of the good teachers just like I respect the hell out of the good cops.

With crappy pay.
And have to work a whole 12 months as well

No one is forcing them to teach. So they should do their job and shut the frick up about it when the job they chose to have sucks arse. Sorry they don't get paid 100k a year, but they CHOSE the profession. I'm certain no one enters college to get an education degree expecting 75k a year to teach kids how to count.
If they hate it that much they should go get another job.

That's why I'm not a teacher

Scruffy wants to say "many", but he is leaning towards most of them being unqualified to teach.
Combine that with our decreasing academic scores, the getting tied up in politics, and their what seems like constant complaining, and you have a perfect storm.

The reason people respect teachers less is because no other profession pats themselves on the back and complains more than teachers. I get it, kids are assholes but you knew that going into it.

40k a year
Not only is this number the lower bound of teaching salaries in the US, it also needs to be grossed up for comparison purposes. If you account for hours, teachers make an annualized salary well in excess of $60k per year, with generous benefits and retirement, a highly predictable schedule, outstanding job security and opaque measures of accountability. I appreciate what teachers do and think their work can be thankless, but let's not be misleading.

More like "40k for 1/2 of the year." They get some awesome vacation time and other benefits.

Didn't read the whole thread yet, but this shite cracks me up.
First of all, their salary directly corresponds to the scarcity of people that are interested/qualified for the job. As of 2015, $40k is all it takes to entice people to take the job.
Second of all, most teachers in 2015 are retiring after 25-30 years on the job, and they're receiving ~$2700-$3300/month in pension benefits. That is the equivalent of social security benefits and $450,000 401k in the private sector. Cry me a fricking river.

For me, that would be a miserable career choice. I worked in the school system for a couple years and having the summer off couldn't make up for how much I hated the field.
