He did the right thing, in hindsight. That could have just as easily been the wrong decision. Glad it worked out...

Definitely would've dropped something on it. I'd be more worried about a black bear accidentally knocking my stand down than intentionally hurting me

Probably. Make noise and he'll back down and leave you alone.
We had a tree climber at one of our places of businesses last week. Our way of moving them is to shoot a flare, it's the only thing that works. The flare missed the tree climber and damn near hit me in the face.
