you have earned her wrath, forsaking her for the newest thing that shows up on your doorstep.
To the OP, i knew my lab was ready when his every breath was a struggle. He just gasped and gasped, and nothing seemed to make him feel better. Sad times.

Praying she improves for you.

I think it's just ibuprofen tbh
Ibuprofen is poisonous to dogs...
The canine medicine is similar in name...it's called carprofen(sp?)...so I can see why some would be confused.

I knew it was time for my mother in laws cat when I ran over it in the driveway going .5mph and yelling "he'll move" at my wife when I was getting close....he didnt. Made a slow crunch sound.
He drug himself around the garage so I shot him in the head.....it was time

It never sat right with me to let another person, such as a vet, put down one of my dogs. If it has to be done, I have been and always will be the one to do it.

Pretty spot on answer

Vet adjusted her pain meds, gave her some other stuff for her anxiety, so we're going to give it another week and see how it goes. Hoping for the best.

Just about killed me when we had to put down our black lab when she was only about two years old, of course I was the one that hit her with my truck. When our chocolate lab goes, I don't know how I will handle it. Had him 9 years now and he is basically my shadow.

Jim:
There's no easy way to "know". I just know this...when I decided I was letting the dog live for me rather for her..I had to let her go. With the miracles of medicine these days I think it's harder on humans than the animals. Luckily for me she made it easy on my in the last hours...trying to bite and snarl at me..She knew it was time too.
She wouldn't eat. She lost control of her bladder. The biting and snarling told me.
The good Lord has blessed me with some good dogs in my life...and I'm thankful, but I truly believe heartworms in the 80s before the medicine was so easy to buy..was a God send. It was easier to let a dog go to that...then having to put one down. I guess I'll get crucified on here...but know this...as soon as all my current dogs are old enough now..they go on the meds. A 7-8 yr old can't afford heartworm meds.

Very true. One of the three hardest things I had to do in my life. Hope I never have to again, but I'm sure I will.

Going through this at this very moment with my 13 year old sheltie. She is having trouble standing and has had trouble keeping food down. I had worked up the courage to do it today and then she rebounded. I talked with the Vet he said he sees that all the time. The last one I put down I knew 100%. I know it is coming and it is tough when they are so loyal.

Ficox or phicox if she isn't on it. Works eonders.

This has sadly been my experience. They won't drink either and they're basically living off IV infusion.

Yesterday was a pretty good day, she's mostly pain free, still eating, and can go for walks. But, she doesn't have bowel control, and her cognitive decline is very noticeable. She paced last night from 9 PM to 3 AM before settling down, and I haven't been to bed yet. Sometimes I know she knows who I am, other times I'm not sure. This is killing me. I don't know if we'll last the week the vet wanted to try.
Sorry, I know this isn't really the reason for this board, but I'm just here by myself and needed somebody to hear it.

You have my sympathy. I don't envy your situation one bit.

If there's one thing most of us have in common on this board it's that we love and respect our loyal pets. Letting one go can be very tough and we're always here to listen.
