Pros- It will always start and get you from point A to point B.
Cons- Not the most comfortable ride and doesn't get great gas mileage.
Source: I drive a mid 90's 4Runner. I'm sure the newer ones are better.
ETA: Pro-
Looks better at 18 years old than most of the new cars coming out.

Reliable, comfortable, nice ride, will last at a minimum into the 200k miles range, etc
Con: depends on model year (still not significant issues, you could make the fixes yourself). I've had a 3rd and 4th gen with no problems.

Cons...
efresh grille is love or hate.
Engine and 5speed tranny while highly reliable, are outdated.
If buying new, don't expect much off sticker.
Pro...
Body on frame
VERY reliable
Great resale/hold value
Decent mileage 24mpg highway

Too expensive on the used market. You can typically get the gx470 for the same price or less.
Only real cons there.

I have a '15 TRD PRO.
I love everything about it.
sure fuel mileage could be better, but I bought an SUV.
rumors of a diesel coming next year

We were looking at the 4Runners and Explorers when shopping. The 4Runner was very stiff (actual SUV) compared to the Explorer (crossover). Since it was to be a kid carrier, we chose the Explorer. It has been fantastic and gets extremely good gas mileage for the size and has a third row seat that people can actually sit in. At 70k mileage and hasn't had a single hiccup.
I really liked the 4Runner and it felt like a tank but it also drove like one and looked like one on the interior.
I later bought a Tundra Crewmax because I liked the tankiness feeling from the 4Runner.

My current vehicle and will likely be my next one. My only complaint about my current one is I didn't get 4 wheel drive.

I really like the TRD edition. But the price tag is a bit too much for a 4Runner

Tough decision between this and a Tacoma for me.

A 4Runner is the vehicle my dad (no pics) has ever owned over the past 15 years. He has gone through a few models of course, but he swears by their reliability and most other things we look for when buying a car. I have driven it several times, and admittedly it is not the smoothest of all rides, but overall it seems like a pretty awesome SUV if that is what you're looking to buy.

Damn - like 5th thread on this fricking vehicle in the last week.

I think it will have complete overhaul for 2016. Might not want to spend $$ on a new car to have the body style change completely in a few months...
