Yeah, this movie. I thought this movie was very good and I liked the ending but I am baffled as to why it's considered one of the best movies of all time. I hope they never try to reboot this movie but someone will eventually.

I agree wholeheartedly. It was a very entertaining film but Nicholson's performance seemed like nothing special and I personally didn't find the resolution to be as satisfying as I had hoped.

It is a very good movie and one I really like. It is one of those flicks that Hollywood just jizzes over. I like LA Confidential better. Just because Nicholson is in it doesn't make it better.

It was pretty good - I think it gets a lot of ink due to the nature (and kinda sick twist) of the story . . . and its setting. The sequel (The Two Jakes) was kinda so-so and a box office bomb.

It is very well made and directed, but it is somewhat a relic of the 70's 'everything is corrupt' school of film.

Everything is corrupt.

The script is what makes this movie so entertaining and why many consider it one of the best.

phenomenal script, well-made, well-shot

Surprised so many people aren't big fans. It's in my top 10.

I think it is a fantastic flick.

Yeah, along with the total lack of resolution or happiness, "it is what it is" ending.
A corruption story at the heart of early-modern Los Angeles was perfect for Hollywood of that era.
But the fact that it was a modern, beautifully filmed take on the classic noir genre is probably the main reason it stands out.

Never was one of my favorites.

Chinatown was so good Hollywood forgave Roman Polanski for being a rapist and a pedophile.

It's a perfect example of early 70s Auteur film making that just doesn't get done anymore.Overrated? Maybe, but the great job of period look the film has plus the ballbusting ending make it unique. Pefect example of neo noir style. If remade, producers would probably give it a happy ending, which would suck. And a GREAT Jerry Goldsmith score.

Forget it, Jake, it's Chinatown

I didn't get the big deal about this movie either. Really slow with a horrible ending.

Damn it. Beat me to it.
This movie is great, as it shows how the corrupt institutions of day to day life actually deal with the individual crusading hero. The system always wins. The stories of one person making a difference are fantasies we sell to children.
Also, corruption doesn't often look evil. It just is. The wheels of the machine just slowly crush everyone, and make us do their bidding. Most people are just trying to get through their day without hassle. The corrupt cops aren't really bad people, nor is the water board. But the truly idealistic must be destroyed.

I had to look this up, and I have only seen bits and pieces of it, but I liked what I saw. Now I have to find the full movie.
