I understand how it can offend people. That's not the issue.

As I watch the Stanley Cup finals, I became curious why the Chicago "Blackhawks" and the Cleveland "Indians" go unnoticed, while the "Redskins" are under PC fire.

What about the "fighting irish"? It directly implies the stereotype of a drunken irish man who wants to fight at the bar.

For one thing, the NFL is the #1 sport in the US & Washington DC in a major TV market.

As far as I know, "Blackhawks" isn't a slur among Native Americans.

The only controversy I remember about the Cleveland Indians is this photo.

Redskin was a racial slur used to describe Native Americans. I don't think people should care, but its not close to the same as the others.

Blackhawks:

quote:

"The Blackhawks’ founder was Maj. Frederic McLaughlin, whose family owned Manor House Coffee, a popular brand in the first half of the 20th century. McLaughlin named the team after the Blackhawk division, a unit he helped lead as an officer in the Army. It was formed during World War I, but the war ended before the unit, or McLaughlin, saw action. The unit was named for a Sauk and Fox American Indian leader, Chief Black Hawk, who fought against the United States government in the War of 1812 and in 1832."

and Indians is a generic term created by people that were confused what continent they were on (and has gotten some shite before).

I agree. I'm disappointed there aren't more colorful team names like the New Orleans Negros, Seattle Slant Eyes, Los Angeles Chinamen, Brooklyn Hymies and San Francisco figs. Political correctness sucks.

The reason Red Skins is a news story is because somebody put in the time effort and money to file a grievance with the US Patent and Trademark office. I don't remember the exact details but IIRC the NFL was able to stall this in the system for a fairly long time, like over 10 years. It's not just some random protestors, it's a well organized and funded legal campaign against it. Makes me wonder if Jerry Jones isn't behind it

"Blackhawks"

Blackhawks are a tribe from the area. As long as they don't create caricatures of natives, it's not really a matter of racism.

Redskin is an inherently racist term. Indians, although rooted in a certain level of ignorance, is also nowhere near as offensive as Redskin.

Imagine if the NFL had a team called the Memphis Darkies and had a drawing of a delta bluesman as the logo. This is tantamount to that.

Chief Wahoo certainly hasn't gone unnoticed. The Indians have been phasing out (allegedly) the Chief for four or five years.

eta. I would wager that the Redskins' logo would be less offensive it belonged to the Indians. Whereas it would be more offensive for the Redskins to have Chief Wahoo.

Because it's the most overtly racist name.
