Matt Damon is in both movies, and both movies include a setting somewhere other than Earth. Outside of that, really nothing in common.
the book is pretty fun and amusing. Damon's character has a rather hysterical personality and does some reasonably realistic ingenious engineering to stay alive on mars. its one of the things that makes this book a bit different than other movies/stories in which a marooned astronaut has to stay alive. This one actually focuses on the details of what he does to live, rather than merely assuming it just all works out - as if it is a side story.

The book was decent enough. I can't see all of the math/physics explanations translating too well to film tho.

I was excited about this being my next book. But the posts here seem as if it's ho hum

who knows - maybe it will not be your kind of book/film. i thought it was pretty cool. cant wait till the movie - which has an amazing cast (plus, i just like space/sci-fi).
should be a fun few weeks in the theater as it comes out around same time as spectre and star wars!

Not sure why your link starts towards the end of the video. Here's a link to the entire thing from the beginning.

ETA... I can't freaking wait for this, it looks great. The details of the ship are spot on for habitats down to the cargo bags, boxes and straps.

Book was a pleasant surprise for me. I thoroughly enjoyed it. When I read it I was ignorant of the fact that a film was being made, and I remember distinctly thinking "this would make a good movie".

gotta say, the recent influx of actual 'space' movies is great.
and i'm glad Nolan's not the one directing this, as it looks like it's something I will be able to comprehend.

Holy crap, that looks really good

The trailer reminded me how much I liked the book. It's such a fast read that the awesomeness of the book faded from my mind pretty quickly. That trailer brought it back.
