A shotgun has to be shouldered which is more difficult than just aiming and pulling trigger.
You obviously haven't shot a lot of handguns.
A shotgun is MUCH easier to be accurate with. Having those two extra points of contact (the forend and the stock) make it much easier to point.
But if you're looking for a budget handgun, my vote is on the Ruger 9E.

Don't lie, you just want a reason to get a pistol and have a $300 budget

Doesn't matter. A handgun in the hands of a scared person who doesn't shoot a lot isn't much more than a double-ended flash bang grenade.
If you're set on a handgun get a used full sized 4 or 6" revolver in .357 magnum. A smith and Wesson 686+ would be the best option. They give you the horsepower in the simplest platform to operate and hit stuff with.
You should really get a compact shotgun though. Your panicking wife isn't likely to hit a charging rapist in the dark with a handgun.

Best pistol for home protection is a shotgun or two.

For a long gun - AR15 with a red dot all day long. Low recoil, easy to aim, and more than 5 shot capacity of most shotguns.
Only problem, it's way outside the $300 budget.
You might be able to pick up a 9mm High Point Carbine in the $300 range. Throw a cheap Bursa red dot on top, and you'd have a budget firearm.

Long arms are not ideal for use in confined spaces. Shot guns, pumps especially, are not an ideal choice. So much bad information in these types of threads. Experience pushes me to rifle and pistol caliber SBR's or sub guns first then to semi auto handguns. Shot guns would be last on the list, unless Im gonna go ahead and use bird shot and just rack it since the sound scares intruders off.

Not in $300 range, but on the wife's side of the bed. /thread

Is she expecting snakes?

Thanks for fixing out stupidity.
I'm buying my wife a MP5 and a sig 9mm and sending her to spec ops school. It's gonna be awesome when she frags out the staircase and sweeps the house of all of the nazis.

How many .22 bullets do you own?
Posted on 6/4/15 at 11:10 pm to H.M. Murdock
Get a 270 rifle with a nice scope (3x12). Remember to spend a lot of money on the scope. A gun is only as good as it's scope. Perfect weapon for home defense.

Yeah. I guess this wouldn't phase an intruder.

Make sure it's a Swarovski. The only thing that will stop a criminal for sure.

Who needs a .270? Try a rifle that alternates 300 win mag and 7 mag and you've got yourself the perfect setup.

I need one of those for deer. And apparently home defense also.
