Any ginseng hunters on here?

Just got back from scouting up here in East TN and saw a lot of things to be happy about. Anybody else ready for the season to get here?
I've seen that LA is on some maps/zones as far as habitable areas ginseng will grow in, but I've never spoke with anyone that's hunted it that far south. I know it grows well in certain parts of Arkansas and Mississippi, but I would have thought it gets to hot in LA to grow abundantly. Anyone have any luck?

I saw you mention this in another thread and meant to ask you about it.
*The only knowledge I have is off of the TV show that is probably fake or overly dramatic.
Do you make good money on the gensing? Do you have a certain area you can look?

You can do pretty well if you bust your arse and harvest enough before winter rolls through. My family has someone that we sell it to for +/- $1,000 a lb. depending on the market. It then goes to NYC to a dealer and then from there usually out to Hong Kong.
We've got over 9 lb. dry saved up after two seasons and this going into our third. We should be able to get every bit of 9k for that. It's hard work from walking through remote tracks of forests up in the mountains, but if you love being in the woods and bush wacking anyways, it's paradise.

Very true. My problem with huntin sang up here in SW Virginia is dealing with the timber rattlers and copperheads. Ain't worth it to me.

Never really messed with the ginseng, but years ago, I did pretty well, selling different types of moss and wild plants, that I could find in the woods.
The money could be very good and I really enjoyed doing that,but..got married...started a family..needed insurance..etc...
It was great being able to work when I wanted, and was paid in cash whenever I was ready to sell.

Yeah, the snakes, bear, or falling off the side of a several thousand foot ridge make it... interesting. We've ran into 2 bear this season and had some close calls on slipping off some steep ridges but no snakes yet.
FWIW, I've watched one episode of Appalachian outlaws and thought it was as shitty as Swamp people. Never watched it again bo

I've watched every episode, and if it was real, there would've already been some people kilt on the show. Obviously all those guys are in on it.
Looks like a fun way to make a dollar though.

I like this guy. He runs around pretending to be some badass Bret Michaels with his .22 AR.
