Dr. Darrel Gilbert and his wife, Wendy Katz, hold up the massive redfish Gilbert landed Friday near South Pass. Capt. Mike Frenette said the fish measured 53 1/2 inches long with a 31 1/2-inch girth, and estimated its weight at 65 pounds.

A giant redfish that would have almost certainly broken the current state record was caught — and then released — last Friday afternoon in Venice along the shoreline outside of South Pass.

That is not a 53" long fish
My fish was a LA record if that was the case:

I find it hard to believe the fish survived after fighting that long.

So they took measurements to "estimate" the weight at 65 lbs. The record is 62 lbs if I'm not mistaken. So how in the hell can one say it would have "almost certainly" broken the state record??? It doesn't even look all that big and it's got the whole "I'm holding a super big fish/animal" angle going for it.

Not to be a stickler, but I think the record is 61.

It is. I looked it up. It's in the Coco Marina, I know that much. Still, I don't think you get that accurate of a weight from measurements, so I'm not going spout off that it was almost certainly a record if it was that close. If charts would show that those measurements belonged to a 100 lb fish, then yeah, I'd be willing to make that statement.

BP is and expert at this. They are holding it way in front of them and I have a hard time believing that fish is 4.5' long.

No way that thing weighs 65#

Average width of 4 fingers on a large male 3.5"
Even if we say a full 4", using that picture, that fish is only 10 hand widths or 40" long.

Exactly what I was looking at.

Looks like 53 inches to me. Why are you guys so mad?

You don't think it's a little odd to write an article about how someone caught a fish that "would have been" a state record according to the fishing guide who makes a living off of people paying him to take them to catch big bull reds? I'm not even saying the guy is lying. It may very well measure exactly what they say. But I don't think you go around claiming you probably caught the state record with that thin of proof.
I don't have a lot of fish pics available to compare, but this is an old pic I had of an AJ I caught. This fish weighed right around 35-40 lbs (used an old scale, but was definitely smaller than a 54lb fish we weighed in at a rodeo). I just can't see how that redfish weighed 65 lbs. Now I will admit that the current record fish doesn't look that long and is a fat fat fish. Could be the case here, but that pic just doesn't look that way to me.

scaled it based off of his 3/4" ring finger width
fish is 47" long
fish is 47" long

Follow the math above and you will see it is not 53" long.
Many here accept there is a certain amount of elaboration in hunting and fishing stories. That is all well and good between friends and with people who don't know any better. But for a guide to attempt to pass off a fish as being 53.5" long that is clearly not that long in the photo, just seems not to sit well.

Calling someone out on a falsehood and being mad are totally different. But who likes to be lied too?
And I am certain this fells is not pulling any shenanigans, lol.

Here's a huge one from yesterday with Travis from Reelin Good Charters in Dularge. No mention of a record here

They posted another story with details on how to estimate weight.
I think I've met mike once or twice, doesn't come across as a cocky bullshitter like most of the guides you run across.

What did you do to your thumb?

Big deal. I release them bigger than that all the time.
