Who is your all time favorite athlete and why?

Mine is Lou Gehrig, hands down. I know I am not really going out on a limb choosing him, but it is too easy. He is not only my favorite baseball player, but I would consider him my sports hero.
Lou Gehrig represents more than just a sports idol. His approach to life is one that I try to emulate as well.
This picture sums it up perfectly. This was taken after Lou Gehrig finally benched himself against the Tigers after having experienced the effects of ALS for a long time (he would never play a game again). He is literally dying in this photo, and he doesn't want it to show or have a negative effect on the team. A true man devoted to a purpose greater than himself. I keep this picture at my work as a reminder to put things in perspective and to keep my chin up and always just work hard, no matter what happens.
He will always be my favorite. Even if one doesn't like the Yanks, the respect for Lou Gehrig is pretty much universal.

Either Cam Newton because of that smile, or Mark Grace, because of that liver.
