If I was that lawyer I would have told the judge to stop being a petulant fool and that it is not a judge's role to make gratuitous comments about his personal feelings "for the record." His job is to assess the seriousness of the crime and the appropriate punishment for the criminal, not to editorialize about the judge's feelings being hurt by how a 3 year old child has reacted. Then I would have told him that focusing a sentencing hearing on assessing blame on a victim about how she feels casts serious doubt on his ability to perform the duties of an elected judge. Finally, I would have told him that taking offense at the victim while allowing the violent home-invading criminal to serve probation sends the wrong message to criminal and victims alike, no matter the color of their skin.
Then I would have gone to jail for contempt of court.

Did anyone watch the video? The judge says to the (white) prosecutor, "surely you understand what I'm saying." At first the prosecutor says "of course judge" but then backtracks and says, "actually, no, I don't see what you're saying."
I'm sure the prosecutor was worried about standing up to a judge he probably appears in front of all the time, but at least he stood his ground a little.

Racism and stereotypes exist for a reason. Many times its ignorance and a close-minded upbringing that perpetuates these beliefs. The black community has every right to be outraged when these things rear their ugly heads.
But they should be equally as incensed when members of their own community do something that perpetuates (and to many people, confirms) the negative stereotypes of black males. sadly it looks like Judge Stevens only compounded the problem by letting a violent criminal with a prior record get off with a slap on the wrist.
