Story released on April 6th about an Uber driver in Houston, Duncan Burton, who has been charged with sexually assaulting an unconscious female passenger. As part of the investigation, the City discovered that Burton did not posses a valid Houston transportation permit and additionally that Uber allowed Burton to continue to work for two months following the alleged assault.

The story gets better though. Turns out the esteemed Mr. Burton passed the Uber administered background check despite having serving 14 years in federal prison for conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine.
Driver Had Federal Drug Conviction
City officials here in Houston seem to have their jimmies quite rustled by the situation.

Well this is making me question my use of Uber in NYC on Thursday.

Are you not able to drive people around as an Uber or Taxi driver if you are a convicted felon?

(from what i remember seeing on the news) the woman agreed to go sleep it off at his place. she woke up in an unknown man's home. that's her problem, she wasn't assaulted in the car.

Yea, I don't get this. If someone has a drug conviction they can't drive someone around?

Stories I read suggested she was passed out and he took her to his residence where the alleged assault occurred. Whether she suggested going to his house or if he made the decision unilaterally will be debated

So it's not a background check then.

It just cracks me up to see people take a few incidents and blow them up but yet completely ignore the facts of "their side's" faults as well. One assault? Ban uber! 20 assaults by cab companies? Well just think of those Uber people driving around in their own cars!!!

Damn, there goes the dependable, timely, cheap rides from the Heights to Midtown/Washington -- rides that often come with an aux cable as well as the implication that one person pays the negligible amount in exchange for a drink later.
Drunk driving fatalities should normalize back to their old levels as well, in the name of safety.

The background check goes back 7 years, if it was prior to that it wouldn't show up.

Yep, I'm sure this "legal" Montreal cabbie's background is a white as the driven snow:

I think you're missing the point. People are going to get raped, it's just going to happen. As a society we need to make sure that these rapes are being performed by licensed and accredited cab drivers with the proper credentials, not just any Joe-Blow off the street with a smart phone.
