I bought a 1997 TJ new with the 2.5L, it was so underpowered I considered it unsafe, and sold it after 3 years. I later bought a used 2000 TJ with the 4.0L which I still have, the difference in power is incredible.

My wife has a TJ with the 4.0, 6 speed, and it is awesome. My in laws have a TJ with the 2.5 that they pull behind their motor home, and it's a complete piece of shite. I never dreamed there'd be such a difference btw the 4 and 6, but there is. I drove it to BR once, from New Roads, and had to put it in 3rd just to make it up the bridge. Get the 4.0 or something else entirely. Don't buy a 2.5 Jeep.

You will regret buying a 4 cylinder, that I can promise.

I have a 4cyl YJ. Would have bought a 4.0 if I could do it over again. They have NO POWER

I am in the market for a used jeep and looking at the TJ models. I know there are many jeep owners here and I wanted to know the opinion on the 4cylinder with the 5 speed trans? It seems like all the tj's im finding within my budget are the 2.5.

That would be ideal, but as stated they are a few thousand more on the used market.
There is a reason for this.
Buy a blown one and have searchers do the 3.4l toyota v6 swap
The 4.0 is the best engine ever in a jeep. The way it is looking, it is the best that will EVER be put there.
Just a heads up, if the 4.0 isn't in ypur price range, it is unlikely you are ready for the yearly repair bills either...

Not only is the 2.5 a dog on the highway, it isn't much use when you get into a decent amount of mud.
And having a Jeep, even if you are not a serious off-roader, you will at some point get into some mud. The 2.5 just doesn't have enough power to spin the tires quickly enough, particularly with mud grips. It has very little torque compared to the 4.0.

4.0 best jeep engine yet, sold my Cherokee with 224k miles about 10 years ago. Still see it every once in awhile.

do not buy the 4 cylinder. After 100,000 miles they are a ticking time bomb. GET THE 4.0, best jeep engine ever.

For the trail, the 2.5 is fine. If you want to drive it on the interstate, get the 4.0.
Go with the 6. You'll be much happier and it's easy to find one.

I have owned a 4cyl and 4.0.
4.0 all the way.

Also if the desire for bigger tires is in the equation then 4cyl will feel like crap. I have fond memories of 33s and my 4 squirrels struggling to get up the Mississippi River bridge.

I've driven a 2.5, but I've owned 2 of the 4.0L jeeps. An old YJ in high school and college, and my current TJ. 4.0 is the only way to go. Unless you're going to swap in a Hemi or chevy 350, get the 4.0L. Plus we had another Grand Cherokee that had the 4.0L. I drove it a few years after college. It was a great engine. I'm not sure why they even offered the 2.5L, or why they went away from the 4.0L to a V6.

Crash tests. They could have made the 4.0 more fuel efficient. They could NOT change the engine from a large long straight six.
In an accident, engines don't crumple.

Thanks guys. I'm still lookimg and not in a super big hurry to purchase but would like one by June

The 4 cyl (any variant) is a worthless pile of crap.
Avoid at all costs.

You will probably never be in a situation where you will need a 4.0 so go with the 4 cyl.
