Poor families plan to spend more than 5% of their income on prom this year, according to a new survey.

Families with a household income of less than $25,000 plan to spend $1,393 for the prom, according to Visa's annual nationwide survey on high school's most storied night. That's compared to those making more than $50,000, who plan to spend an average of $799.

I think this is at the heart of "driving a fancy car while living with 10 relatives" thing.

I can't fathom spending that much of even the 799.. I believe my expenses were.. 75 for tux rental, 75-100 for transportation, 50 for food and booze as we did dinner at a friends house with about 20 of us. After party was paid for by one of the parents at their house. So probably 250-300 at the absolute most

I think I spent like $150 on prom...it wasn't that big of a deal. Spending over $300 is ridiculous...

Granted my prom days were a long time ago but how is this even possible?

Are helicopter tours of the city expected these days?

I remember getting my very first credit card like 3 weeks before my senior prom. Baaaaaaaaaaddddd move

For real though, I think I spent less than $200 for dress/shoes/hair/accessories.

The amount of money wasted on kids in order to show off on Facebook is completely off the charts.

I learned several months ago it is now common for guys to have very elaborate plans to ask a girl to prom - like similar to try hard guys that cook up those elaborate schemes to ask a girl to marry them.

I just asked in between class one day
