one great thing about primarily relying on EDM for music is that i have countless podcasts/set that i can download for free, 100% legally
livesets is the way to go
most dj's don't make studio albums anyway
EDM is such a terrible name.

Jay-Z has proved he understands the business side of things. I give him credit for that.
Having said that. The last time I spent money for anything to do with music was in 1999.

I haven't purchased an album since 2003-ish
I love Spotify
And I go to 8-10 concerts a year.
That's what music is worth to me

if they pull their content off services like Spotify in order to be exclusive to something like this, wouldn't that simply generate a lot more illegal downloading of their material instead of what their intention is? I would imagine a lot of people would opt to not pay for an additional service and say F-it, and start torrenting.

I tip my cap to him for diversifying and trying to capture more money but he's not getting any of mine. Not one penny.

Whether you like the people or not, TIDAL does offer a higher quality. That is not something anyone can debate. Its's been out for quite some time, and the reviews are pretty good. CD quality music through a streaming service is pretty impressive if it actually works. The price needs to come down surely, but that happens with more funding in the early stages to ease the costs while people move over.
I'm not telling you to ditch Spotify (because frankly, I won't), but don't let some bullshite PR stunt send you all into a frenzy and ignore that the product does have advantages to what you're currently listening to. This service was around before this keynote.

the entertainment industry has seemed unwilling to understand this concept for a while. I love spotify for its convenience and value, but if it were gone tomorrow or skyrocketed in price, I'd be able to cut it out without much of a problem. I'd simply find another alternative.

What bit rate is the high quality music?
How is that going to affect mobile data plans?
Blind testing shows that people can't discern between 256 kbps and lossless audio.

I have no issues with the sound quality on spotify, so if that's what tidal wants to hang its hat on they're fricked.

EDM sounds too much like BDSM or something sexual like that

THE UNTZ IS THAT FEELING YOU GET WHEN BROWNIE DROPS THE BOMBS LIKE NAPALM ON YOUR GROOVE JUNGLE AKA SOUL, MANGS CHILLS TO THE SIDE WITH THE SWANG DIP SWANG DIP SWANG DIP, A BUNKER BOMB TO YOUR DEEMSTER TRENCH AKA MINDS EYE. ALAN CHILLS IN THE BACK WITH THE TSKA TSKA TSKA, A GROOVE MISSLE SET ON B'GOCK, AND BARBS BRINGS IT ALL BACK HOME WITH THE DEEDLE DE DEE DEEDLE DE DEE, A PSYCHIC BREAKDOWN MINE, HIDDEN IN THE TRANCE PASTURE, BLOWING OPEN YOUR BISCO CHAKRA, THAT IS THE UNTZ.

I mean I guess you have some people audiophiles who truly give a damn, but they're in the minority.
So TIDAL will dominate the top 20 music, audiophile demo

If this is the new thing artists are going to do, then I'll have to dust off my old torrent accounts.

The music industry priced themselves out once before. Appears as if they are poised to do it again. They are greatly overvaluing their product.

Most services (such as Spotify) use 320kbps. TIDAL HiFi streams at 1411kbps. They also offer a service at the same quality as Spotify at $9.99.
That's largely dependent on the audio being listened to and the hardware being used. To the trained ear, there's a difference, but you're right that most people won't hear the difference. There's less being knocked off of the track itself, though, and to the audiophile with high end headphones, there's a difference. You're hearing the track as it was intended to be heard with a fuller range of highs, lows, and whatever else may be lost in Vorbis schemes.
To be clear, I'm not claiming to be a trained ear or audiophile, but I do believe that we shouldn't just settle on a low bitrate and not ever progress just because people don't think they need it. A lot of people claimed they didn't see any difference between HD and standard definition television, and they didn't need it. If we can get FLAC/ALAC streaming as the norm, it's a plus.
