The Omen (1976)
Also Pumpkinhead. I had a friend who showed me this movie when I was a kid. I couldn't sleep with the light off for days. I can't remember which one I saw first.

Children of the Corn. My mom let me watch it for some reason when I was little. I watched it last week for the first time since then thinking it wasn't going to be as scary but it freaked me out just as much as it did back then!

Large Marge in Pee Wee's Big Adventure scared the shite out of me.
Poltergeist is probably the first really scary movie I remember watching.

i really can't remember but i do remember being freaked out at Aliens once when it came on tv...that may be it
i can certainly tell you the most popular "first movie that scared the hell out of x" movie for people that crossed my path, and that's fire in the sky
i loved renting that for get togethers or church lockins or recommending it to people. never failed me

it's a great "set up" movie b/c it has some creepy moments but isn't that bad
the REALLY scary scene is also a flashback, so you don't expect it. then it starts and this is how it unfolds

Watched The Exorcist at a way too early age, terrified me for years.

I hated scary movies as a kid. They terrified me. I distinctly remember Silver Bullet scaring the frick out of me one night, and that shite stuck with me for years and years.
And of course, Jaws. shite, Jaws still scares me to this day when I'm in the ocean swimming.

Silver Bullet (1985)
That movie touched on several popular fears--werewolves, abusive priests, Gary Busey, and helpless handicapped children.

The Amityville Horror legitimately scared the shite out of me.
The Ring was my first "scary" movie to watch, but it didn't scare me like Amityville did.
ETA: When I was a young kid, The Mask (the Jim Carey movie) and E.T. scared the hell out of me, but I don't count that
