My kid is a 15 year old gamer. I've allowed M rated games such as Call of Duty, Far Cry 4, and Dying Light. I've always been against GTA because you get points for killing cops and civilians. He says GTAV is not as bad as the previous games. I have no idea but I'm certain this board can help steer me right.
You think your kid's going to turn into a cop killer or murderer if he plays GTAV?

That's not really the issue here.

You should do what my mom did, keep him too busy doing house work, yard work, hell even real work at that age. Then in his precious free time, you can bet he will not want to spend it playing games in his room. I learned two lessons from that. 1st I learned the value of hard work. 2nd I learned if I got out of the house and hung out with friends, I couldn't get any more chores from my mom. My mom either got peace and quiet or she got a clean house, win-win

She should keep doing what she has done for the last 15 years

The new GTA isn't even in the same stratosphere as Vice City. If the shite going on in this game isn't anything new to your 15 year old you are doing something VERY wrong.
In Vice City, you could beat down hookers with golf clubs until they were a bloody mess, torch entire sidewalks full of people with flame throwers, and snipe the heads off of police officers.
I love how we treat GTA V as so much more violent because it has more polygons

I feel like this is appropriate here...
Old people play GTA V
what happens when you give a bunch of old people a controller and GTA V? fun, apparently

I think the game is a little more twisted. As I mentioned previously, Trevor brings a whole new level of maturity to the game IMO.

Grand Theft Auto Vice City and Grand Theft Auto V are night and day.

We're talking cartoon-esque graphics versus approaching photo-realism.
And if there is a GTA 6, 7, 8, etc. (and I'm sure there will be as long as they continue to sell) we'll probably find the previous release tamer than the most recent.

Yeah realism is exactly what makes it so bad. Not even necessarily the graphics. You could leave everything else the same but make the story fantastical and cartoonish instead of seedy and realistic, and it would be way less disturbing IMO

quote:The only time I ever got to play Vice City was at a friend's house. To this day I've never owned a GTA. I wanted to play them when I was younger, but I guess I grew out of it. I had Saints Row 2 but that's about it in terms of sandbox shoot 'em up genre.
C'mon The kid is 15. Let him play some GTA. I was 13 (I think) when Vice City came out. My friends and I played the crap out of that game when it came out.
I agree with the majority in this thread. He'll live if he doesn't get to own this game. Will he eventually play it at a friend's house? Sure. But there's a huge difference in playing something alone in your room than with a group of friends. The mindset is totally different. Just because he'll play it elsewhere doesn't mean you make it readily available for him to access at any time.

You're doing the same thing, torching people, shooting cops, running people over, running gangs, etc. But because it's so out of the loop it's just entertainment.

Kid has probably already watched the entire game on youtube. Let him play it.

In 2003, Vice City was a good looking game. This exact discussion was going on 12 years ago. Replace Vice City with GTA 2.
I've almost played all the way through GTA V and I honestly didn't see much worse in it than in an r-rated movie and movies like the Kill Bill franchise and games like Postal 2 were a lot more offensive to me.

We should break this down to 2 threads, one for parents and one for others who have failed at making other human beings.
No 15 year should be allowed to play this game by their parents. If they find another way to play it, that is what teenagers do. They will find ways to drink, have sex or do drugs; but parents should never allow or empower their kids to do those items.
The millennials are currently a waste of a generation, there is no reason to help them any further.

Jesus he is 15. I played GTA 3 when I was 11 or 12

IMO, there is a difference to watching a movie and actually causing the actions within a game. You are a spectator to a movie and you see it as that. You do not control the actions, you observe them.
In a game like GTA V, you decide to pick up the prostitute, torture humans, take hitch hikers to cannibals, do meth, run over random people in the way. You control the debauchery, which will desensitize you to some of those actions.
I enjoyed the game, but it is not a game for a 15 year old.
