It's crazy how the locker room fell apart right before our eyes. Payton/Loomis lost their way.

I don't think it's crazy at all. When your HC and key assistants are gone for months up to a year, all kind of things can develop and quietly fester. I'm purely speculating, but I think it took SP into the season last year before he could see what had developed in his absence, but then it was too late and he had to ride out the season best he could. Now that he fully understands, he's hit the reset button.

So if you're looking to place some blame, look no further

First off all frick Goodell.

From Prior Post but I think it applies here too.

Brees is a dedicated workaholic, first man there last out Peyton Manning Tom Brady type. He is nearing the end of his career and wants another Superbowl run just like CSP and all of us. If he wanted them gone then it was because of their work ethic.

The Saints were the biggest under performing team in the whole damn NFL last year. A lot of people had us in the Superbowl and we didn't even make the playoffs. We know the defense lacks talent, but the offense apparently lacked effort and desire.

They are sending a fricking message and damn if I don't like it. I would rather go to war with people giving all they have than a bunch or lazy prima donnas. At least if it doesn't work out you know you just didn't have people that were good enough not because they didn't try hard enough. The Seahawks are building a whole run on this philosophy. Rejects that try harder.

"Cap hell" is all relative

When half the league has +$20m in space going in to free agency and you have to do numerous adjustments just to get under to sign a few guys, you might be in "cap hell"

However you spin it, it wasn't ideal

Yeah we saved on Graham but we lost on the deal as a whole. You left that part out. It wasn't a move that cleared cap room. It was a move that lost it.

i thought we came out about $2.5 ahead when graham was traded, at least for our 2015 cap

Correct ($2 million), without factoring in Unger. We lost $2.5 million total

When factoring in Unger, we actually lost cap space for 2015 in the trade

Stills had the same kind of problems, notice both aren't here anymore. What Sean and Drew want, Mickey makes sure they get.

This seemed like bullshite at the time but maybe there was more to this than most fans were willing to admit last summer.

quote:

Graham lost in part because Payton’s testimony helped persuade Burbank to pull out a yardstick and draw a line in the slot. The coach is quoted multiple times in the 14-page ruling, explaining for example that “[w]hen our receivers are lined up widest in formations, they are never covered by safeties or linebackers ever,” and that “[n]ever ever ever ever ever does a linebacker match up with a wide receiver ever.”

The extra “evers” could create the impression that Payton was extra forceful in his testimony, which would make it a little harder for him to unruffle feathers in the locker room. Regardless, he’s more than smart enough to know that he’ll have some fences to mend, and he’s more than smart enough to figure out how to do it.

I don't know if any of this diva stuff is true or not. But it's difficult to believe, for me, because we're talking about a guy who grew up with virtually nothing. I wouldn't think "wide receiver money" and "tight end money" would be such a big deal. In the end, it's all millions.

It could be true, it could not be but you are grossly underestimating the egos some athletes have. Just as you say you don’t think a few millions could turn Graham into a diva, I can definitely "Jimmy Graham Friday's" at practice having an ego stroking effect on him.

They're living in a different world. Most of these guys have lavish lifestyles and they know that their careers are going to be short, so they need to make as much money as possible with every deal. May not seem like a big difference but if you're getting at most 2 or 3 big deals in your entire career, it makes a big difference.

Well put. Even the "everyday person" would feel slighted by their employer if their employer openly attempted them from maximizing their earning potential. Like you said, football careers are short so you can see opportunity for animosity to be there in Graham's eyes.

Yeah most normal human beings have the opportunity to make more and more money as they get more and more experience/wisdom, forever and ever... just not true with guys who have careers that last 4-10 years max. Every dollar they leave on the table is a dollar they will never ever see.

The Saints made JG the highest paid TE EVER. I just have a hard time equating that to somehow preventing him from "maximizing his earning potential."

I can even sympathize with his grievance. I think he had a valid case. But he lost, and I think it definitely should have ended there.
