You boys ever heard of overkill? You can see my rig in the sig, 8hp and fully loaded it'll run 17...with just me and gear around 21-22. Can't imagine 3x the horsepower with only an extra foot

That's not really overkill. Fully loaded and 17mph is great, for an 8hp. But in the overall scope of things, 17 isn't very fast. If you want to make moderate runs, 17 isn't going to cut it. 8hp motors have their place, but so do 40s and 50s.

For tiller handles Mercury blows everything else away.
Twist shift is the best shite ever devised. Use it for 6 months and then drive a boat with a traditional lever shift and you'll realize how great the Mercury shift is.
Not to mention my old man's 25 2 stroke merc has never had a problem in 10 years of very hard use. I would love to know how many hours that thing has on it.

I really didn't feel like my boat was over powered. 3/4 throttle was plenty when I was alone. It cuised nicely with a load in it. I never used a gps, so I don't know how fast it was.
If I were to get another 16-48, I would want a 40. I have been in an underpowered boat. It sucks when you can't take 3 people fishing because the boat won't plane.

Rolled 1000 hrs on my 08 yamaha 2 stroke yesterday. I think I changed the plugs twice.
The new zukes are the lightest 4 strokes out right now if draft at rest is a concern.

Sounds like I would be looking at a Mercury.
You don't have to. I had an old Johnson throttle control laying around when I had my boat built. I left the throttle on the tiller of the new motor, and used the controller for forward & reverse and start. Pretty sweet.

You can get a merc with factory stuff.
You ever drank beer while using a Mercury tiller handle? It's glorious.

Hijack alert:
Why is every tiller motor I've run left fricking handed. I would much prefer my right but have yet to run one.....any reason?
Edit: is it for the same reason we drive a boat on the right side paying homage to the old boaters who would steer the rudder on left side if boat with left hand?

had a 40 tiller merc on a 16 xpress and loved it. gave it to my son and bought a 50 tiller merc w/ trim/tilt on my new xpress. love it too.
fishing buddy got a 70 yamaha tiller on his 17ft xpress and it's hard as hell on my shoulder when I fish with him. the handle sits too high for me. the merc just has a much better angle on the handle.
