a sport is any sort of athletic event that is not "judged"

cheerleading, gymastics, etc. are not sports, IMO.

Golf, bowling, cheerleading, etc each participant essentially just does the best that they can, then you compare scores at the end. I don't look at those as sports. To me it has absolutely nothing to do with how much physical exertion you're putting forth.

Do you count track and swimming as sports then?

if you think golf is a sport, then create a definition for a what a sport is

don't tell me what to do. besides, webster already has

quote:

sport
noun
: a contest or game in which people do certain physical activities according to a specific set of rules and compete against each other

: sports in general

: a physical activity (such as hunting, fishing, running, swimming, etc.) that is done for enjoyment

sorry you suck at golf, and at making definitions.

Need to have a defense for it to be a sport. Otherwise, it's a competition or game.

You can play defensively in golf.

To me, a sport is an activity (and use common sense please, monopoly doesn't count) where the opponents are directly attempting to hinder you from succeeding. Football, baseball, basketball, tennis, etc etc see your opponents directly trying to not let you win. This is about how I have always thought about golf and sports. Golf is kind of like playing a big arse board game where you are one of the game pieces

No not really. Track is very much a gray area since, technically, people can get in front of you and impede your progress. If we're talking where everybody is in their own lane, then no definitely not.

No, nobody is stopping you. Whether you finish first or last is 100% dependent on you and how fast you go.

lol no...the people who compete are athletic and it is very difficult, but not a sport. Anything where the outcome is decided upon by judges cannot qualify as a sport in my definition.

Most things in life take skill. So you're saying a physical activity "to an abnormal extent" is all that it takes to be a sport?

a sport, to me, should be defined as a competition involving more than 1 individual (or teams of individuals) in which the competitors (or certain individuals on the team) experience either continuous, or short transient periods of an elevated (70-80% of max) heart rate SECONDARY to physical activity, and not due to chemicals (ie, caffeine) or certain biomolecules (ie, hormones).

Baseball's not a sport. Got ya.

Track and golf existed before baseball, basketball, football, and any of your "sports with a defense."

What did they call track and golf before these sports were invented? Is the word "sport" only 130ish years old?

Can you stop the other players from hitting? Can you stand in the way of their putt? Can you grab their club on the backswing?

There is no defense in golf.

Well I'll pretend you didn't just try to state a fact by using your opinion.

According to MW, a sport is as follows:

a contest or game in which people do certain physical activities according to a specific set of rules and compete against each other

Sorry you suck and have to make up your own definition to feel better about yourself.

So the best athletes in the world that compete in the Olympics don't really play sports? Please.

who gives the slightest shite? Didn't realize sports were now determined based on length of time since formation.

I don't care in the least bit, nor do I consider either one a sport either. You realize somethign can be difficult and challenging and not a sport right?
