posting here and not on the main sports board because this topic is more philosophical, and doesn't so much focus on an actual sport or sports team.
before i get responses from people telling me otherwise just because they've watched golf on sportscenter their whole lives, see if you can come up with a definitive way to describe what a sport actually is, while excluding activities that many would not consider sports, such as poker, darts, billiards, chess, magic:the gathering, starcraft, and croquet.
a sport, to me, should be defined as a competition involving more than 1 individual (or teams of individuals) in which the competitors (or certain individuals on the team) experience either continuous, or short transient periods of an elevated (70-80% of max) heart rate SECONDARY to physical activity, and not due to chemicals (ie, caffeine) or certain biomolecules (ie, hormones).
with such a defintion, the following would be defined as sports: football, soccer, basketball, baseball, hockey, snowboarding, skiing, tennis, running/track, volleyball, cycling, swimming, etc. all the sports one would expect to actually be a sport are sports under this definition.
under this definition the following would not qualify as sports: magic: the gathering, chess, billiards, darts, poker, starcraft (or any other video game), board games, air hockey, paper football, etc. many would agree that these are most certainly not sports.
which brings us to golf. under this definition that clearly separates what most people consider to be sports from non-sports, golf doesn't qualify as a sport, and it shouldn't. i exert about as much physical activity playing air hockey as i would playing golf.
if you think golf is a sport, then create a definition for a what a sport is that wouldn't include things like monopoly and foosball. people think golf is a sport because they've been told it's a sport for their entire lives without actually challenging that notion. and when you do, you'll find that golf doesn't quite fit with what most other people would consider to be an actual sport.

Sorry you suck.
A sport is any kind of competition. Except for cheerleading.

Who gives a shite?
Call it a leisure activity for all I care. Everyone needs to have everything fit to a perfect description these days.
If you don't wanna call it a sport, then don't. But that's not changing anything in this world. Still gonna be shown on sports networks and called a sport by a large majority.
