He as a coach almost garuntees a team to make the playoffs. I still think Monty is a horrible coach we play entirely too slow for the type of roster we have. It's so obvious this team doesnt even try to play fast because they can't run a decent fast break. We still suck defensively and not using this full team full offensive potential. So now with sac with a competent coach we have more competition for a playoff spot with an incompetent coach who thinks playing slow means good defense.

It's a damn shame is what it is. Wasted opportunity for the Pelicans that I'm almost certain is going to bite them in the arse in the future.

I dunno. The Pels are well ahead of the Kings on the court. The next guy the Pels hire needs to be the one to take them to the top. No indication Karl can be that guy, especially at 64.

Yep, not sold on Karl being the guy for this team anyway.

He might not have been the coach for a decade, but he would have been a nice coach to get us into the playoffs.

This doesn't really matter. Especially if we're getting Jrue back after the All Star break, I think this season is going to end up like many of us have predicted from the beginning. We're either going to sneak into the playoffs or barely miss and get another year of Monty.

OPs point has no bearing on this season at all. He's simply stating Karl inherited a top 10 talent, and we likely have ANOTHER fricking team to compete with out West next year while we are still stuck with year 6 of Monty.

Blessing in disguise. Likely can't have Karl and Fred Hoiberg, so let the Kings have Karl, who will be secretly miserable with Boogie and Vivek Ranadive.

It was looking that way with Malone too. The hope for Sacramento staying down is the owner dictating stupid terms to the head coach. The talent is there and seems to be maturing.

Yep. The next year and a half is about setting up the board for a run. The team still has obvious holes that even a better coach might not be able to mask. Identify those holes, replenish some assets, and make moves to fit around Davis. Pretty clear he's not who we thought he would be on offense even 2 years ago.

The obvious danger is the braintrust begins to feel Monty is the guy and the Pels have the new Scott Brooks

I think if we were interested in Karl it would have happened already.

Worst nightmare. The fan base will be pretty disappointed if Monty is here longterm. It's not that he's done a bad job this season. He's been decent and has improved his rotations among other things. There are just better options.

Even though we still have a right to be skeptic about Gordon's longterm health and production, resigning him to a 3/$24MM gives us options this offseason to improve.

We can't predict the market so it's hard to speculate what Asik's next contract will look like. I'd rather let him go than sign him to a Gortat type deal.

Bring back Asik around $9MM per, and that gives you a few million to chase someone in FA, the bi-annual, and the MLE.

We can bring in another guard with the cap space, chase a Gerald Green type with the $5.5MM MLE, resign Cunningham with the bi-annual, and have a deep roster.

Guards: Holiday, Evans, Gordon, Free Agent (~$4MM)
Wings: Green, QPon, Cunningham
Bigs: Davis, Asik, Ryno

Not sure what to do with Ajinca. I might trade him now if he's going to get paid. His stats are enough to warrant some attention around the league.

For some reason Karl brings to mind the quote from Bill Parcells about he didn't become Saints interim coach because "Guys like me threaten Guys like him." with the him referring to Loomis. I have no clue how true that statement was, but a coach who's in his last gig that only cares about passing Nellie in the record books does seem like a coach who might have an agenda different than the front office.

There really isn't much to fear with Ajinca. He's the new Jason Smith, and at most he'll command a Jason Smithesque $2.5 million.

Don't those interests align? Winning but for different reasons.

They can align, and I certainly am not anti-Karl but one thing Monty deserves credit for is being cautious with injured guys instead of pushing them. He's pulled AD and Holiday while on the hot seat even though they wanted to keep playing. Would someone who's got an artificial goal of 55 wins per year be as cautious?
