How many teams in west are more talented?

Had an argument with someone that thinks Monty has done a good job because pels lack talent of most of the west. I disagree. You have probably the best player in the west and only 3-4 teams have more talent in the west.

talent wise we are up there with GSW, LAC, Mavs, and Blazers we just don't have the experience a depth. Out all those teams I named we are the only team the has 5 guys who can give you 30 on any given night.

I'd say Golden State, Clippers, Thunder, Mavs, and Blazers have more talent. The Pels are in the next group with Grizz, Spurs, and Rockets. I think they are more talented than the Suns and definitely more talented than any of the lower teams.

The Grizz are actually very talented. Conley Green Randolph and Gasol.

I think a lot of their success comes from coaching. Gasol is very good, but outside of him no one else on their roster is that much better than their counterpart on the Pels.

Talent wise in the West?
GS, LAC, Mem, Hou, and us imo.
PG: GS = LAC > MEM > NOP > HOU
SG: HOU > GS > NOP > MEM = LAC
SF: GS > MEM > NOP > HOU > LAC
PF: NO > LAC = MEM > GS > HOU
C: MEM = HOU > LAC > NOP = GS
Bench: GS > MEM = HOU > NOP = LAC
Coach: GS = LAC = MEM = HOU > NOP
GS, LAC, Mem, Hou, and us imo.
PG: GS = LAC > MEM > NOP > HOU
SG: HOU > GS > NOP > MEM = LAC
SF: GS > MEM > NOP > HOU > LAC
PF: NO > LAC = MEM > GS > HOU
C: MEM = HOU > LAC > NOP = GS
Bench: GS > MEM = HOU > NOP = LAC
Coach: GS = LAC = MEM = HOU > NOP

The Grizz have a major advantage of experience playing together and, like you said, very good coaching. If Monty (whom I'm starting to pelieve in) can do a good job teaching the team (with this current squad) + we stay healthy, we could be a Grizzlies caliber team next season. I agree that we have mostly similar talent, but AD being clearly the best player on either team is what gives us the greater potential.
I can't find that article about weighted age (ie average age of players, but also considering how many minutes the young/old players get), but I'd bet that the Grizz are a solid 3-4 years older than we are.

You don't think the Mavs are up there?

dallas is better in the center and SG department. Rondo is still fitting in, their depth is lacking now, and Parsons = Tyreke.
SA has been injury plagued all year so it is hard to say.
Phoenix is more about quality depth rather than overall talent in their top 7. I think they might have the 3rd best guard duo in the west though.
OKC is just a two and a half man team.

I think Phoenix has more overall talent than several teams that will make the West playoffs. They just lack experience together (like us, but older) and a true stud. Look at the top 12(!) seeds in the West. Phoenix and Denver are the only teams lacking an elite player.

I mean that one superstar pretty much offsets two average/above average players imo. I think they're very talented, but I don't think they're so talented that they're as talented as some of the west teams.

That's pretty god damn accurate.

Dude this roster dragged Lionel Hollins' arse to a WCF appearence.

This is my take RTR:
The grizz have a trio(Conley/Zbo/Marc) that complements each other about as good as possible plus a very solid 4th guy in Green.
Guys like Beno(a solid vet PG)/Koufos(one of the better back up bigs)/Tony allen(an ace defender) plus Calathes(who's shown very good flashes) and Lee(who's a very balanced 2 way player) complement y'alls system and the trio very well.
Playoff experience/High IQ from practically the whole team/Very strong coaching makes the grizz so good.
The pels don't have near the experience or chemistry the grizz have(we got outveteraned in the first matchup clearly). It's gotten a lot better though.

Oh I completely agree, I just had to laugh at the idea that it is all about coaching.
The talent argument is fluky because people will always downplay Tony Allen's impact because he isn't a good offensive player. His impact is enormous. Throw him in with 3 All-Star caliber players, Courtney Lee (who is shooting 46% from 3, 50+% on the road), Jeff Green, Beno, Calathes, and Koufos, and that is a pretty talented group.

I think this argument is hard to quantify because the teams are so close. There's a reason the recent trades of talent to the west lead to articles with titles like "Arms Race." You are who your record says you are, and in the Western Conference Golden State has separated themselves and then 2-7 are roughly equal with injury being the main thing that's changed the standings much.
And if the basic question in the OP is where will the Pels rank in 2 years, 2 main pieces have big injury clouds over their heads so it's really hard to say without knowing what's going to happen with Holiday and Gordon.

It's not about total talent either. This isn't fantasy basketball. How the talent fits matters. How the talent is deployed matters.
Like you say, just about every team in the West is a key injury from seeing it all topple.
The Pels, on paper, have one of the more talented rosters in the conference. The question has always been, and continues to be, fit and deployment.

That's the biggest difference between the pels and some others right now.
We lost an entire season of guys building chemistry and learning to play together. Monty learning what rotations work best and what not. that can't be understated. We basically started from scratch this season. IF this recent run is any indication, it looks like Monty and the guys are starting to figure things out.
That being said, when fully healthy,(which he still have really yet to see) the pels are definately top 5 in terms of talent.

Maybe our starters, but the benches on those teams is why they are a good bit better than us, and their records show that.

No
We have 1 guy that can give us 30 on any given night, and he has twice as many 30 point games than the rest of the team combined. You are not going to get 30 from Jrue, EG or Ryno on any given night. It's a rare occurrance. Tyreke can, if he tried to, but he'll have to take 20+ shots to do it, and we don't want him taking that many shots.
We are 8-10 in games in which someone scores 30+. 5-7 when AD does it.
