Al-noor is my favorite in that area.
I could easily live off of chicken (or mushroom) tikki Masala and Palak paneer
Their vegetable curry is delicious too.
The buffets are decent but if you order off their menu you get a far superior product. I feel like these buffets and their popularity hide how amazing Indian food can be , to the general population

I love Indian food, but I know plenty of people that won't even give it a shot. I honestly can't say that I've disliked any dish that I've tried. My wife has learned to cook some of our favorites.

This. Ruzil has had some of my mom's cooking before. Nothing can beat it.
Def legit.

I'm seeing the exact opposite trend in Nashville. Indian (thankfully) and Thai restaurants are abundant. The Vietnamese restaurants around me are "hipster" joints and are average. Maybe I'm just spoiled from Tan Dinh and Kim Ahns. Supposedly Nashville has good legitimate Vietnamese spots off Charlotte Pike, I just haven't made my way there yet. The Indian here though... .
I believe I've have it 4 times in the last 10 days.

The Vietnamese restaurants we have aren't really what most people would call good. I really like one of them because they have very filling soups I like a lot for 10 bucks but at the back of my mind, it's silly. The soups are different shapes of beef randomly called every fricking type of steak imaginable despite the fact it isn't and it all tastes the same. Wonderful broth

I don't think it's Ghee as much as many folks that I know don't like Curry..either at all or in the prevalent levels found in many Indian dishes.
Also, even though this is South La, some of the dishes spice/heat level can scare off many folks.

As an Indian, I find the restaurants in Baton Rouge horrendous. Al-Noor is the closest to authentic but even then..
You are so full of shite your eyes are brown.

Well, if he's Indian, his eyes are likely brown though there are some striking examples of blue eyed and more incredible green eyed people from India.
As back to Indian food, a lot of Indians don't like a lot of Indian food. I talked a lot with an Indian Uber driver last week and he said there are some Indian foods he literally can't eat. He said it's super regional and he said one time he traveled down to a city a couple of hundred miles to the south and he went 4 days without eating because he wasn't used to the food. He said they only made food from different regions on Friday.
FWIW

My mom came here in the early 80's and my dad came here in the early 90's. So I am an American of Indian descent (first gen Indian-american).

Anyone who doesn't like ghee is an idiot. Its clarified butter, used in 100% of all restaurants.

The real tragedy of Indian food in the U.S.....the diverse, hugely varied cuisines of a billion plus people has been reduced to a single, Mughal influenced northern Indian "restaurant" standard menu. Butter chicken, biryani, tandoori, etc. We get virtually no southern Indian and NO regionally focused places, unless you travel to Houston.

Best Indian food on the planet. Vij's in Vancouver BC. Ate so much I was uncomfortable for hours.

Mecca has a mom and pop joint with the menu split between Northern and Southern cuisine . :meccaruleslacuisine:

But it's over an hour to the nearest Indian restaurant and even in major cities, they feel under-represented.
If you're in Athens, that's pretty surprising to me. Baton Rouge has at least four Indian restaurants (had five at one point, but I heard Himalayas closed recently because the chef became ill). I know Athens is half the size, but you'd think being a bustling college town, there would be at least one or two.

Yep. There is a guy I work with that would rather dine alone if the rest of us select Indian food for lunch and he has never even tried it. There are a lot of people around here like that. But anyone who is accustomed to the bold, spicy flavors of southern Louisiana cuisine would probably enjoy Indian food as well.

I love indian food but I never eat it because its one of the most fattening foods out there.
a lot of my business accounts are Indian and they always want to take me to a buffet.
everything is cream based or a carb and then they force dessert on me. when I go I end up eating 2,000 calories or more.
I know you can eat healthy there but the majority of Indian dishes contain a cream or coconut milk base with rice and yogurt.

BR definitely has better options than Nola for Indian food. I think all Nola proper has is Nirvana. Metry has Taj Mahal and Gretna has Saffron (which is definitely the best one in Nola).

It can be heavy. I try to go light on the rice and load up on the veg dishes like dahl (lentils), bhindi (okra), saag (spinach), and Bhurtha (eggplant), then have a little chicken tikka masala for dessert.

I think people are just ignorant regarding what's available.
I wouldn't know what to try if I walked in...
