Is This Really How People Decide How Much House They Need?

Had to move to Dallas a couple years back for work. I bought a house in Lakewood. It's older and considered small by Texas standards. I'm from Nola, so old doesn't bother me. It's got character.
Anyway, talking to a coworker who said they're looking for a house. I suggested Lakewood. He said the houses are too small in my area of Lakewood as each person living there needs approx 600-700 sq ft of space. So for a family of 4, you'd need a 2800sq ft house by his standards, which he tells me is common practice.
Also each kid needs their own room. Like he really means NEEDS. He won't even look at a houses unless it has 4 bedrooms because he's got 3 boys(close in age too BTW).
This is the OT so I know most of y'all live in 12 bedroom mansions, but is this really common?

2800 sq ft aint exactly a huge house IMO.

Sounds about right for suburbia.

Poll ten people looking for a home and you will get ten different answers. Why would you assume this one guy you talked to sets the standard for the whole population?

I don't mind letting my wife and kids live with me but I want a house that's big enough so that I never have to see them.

It is a little large but not unreasonable. And yes, 3 kids should be in a 4 BR house if you can afford it

I have no idea what's common, but my wife and I own a 3,500 sq ft home with 4 bedrooms and we don't even have kids yet, so take that for what it's worth.
Of course, we wanted a 2,800 sq ft house... just couldn't get a bank to loan us the money to build one... Had to build a bigger one. Which makes no intuitive sense, but is reality.
Anyway, who gives a shite?

Not big enough.

I mean, I see nothing wrong with this and don't intend to let this be an issue with my own family unless its an emergency or unexpected one.
I'd have hated having to share a room with my brother.

To your OP, that formula is ridiculous but...
Knowing what I know about Dallas, I am shocked they even allow 2800sf houses to exist. Those are some "look at me and my giant place" folks if I have ever seen them. Not to mention, their architecture absolutely blows and I really can't understand why (given how big the state is) that they build those McMansions right on top of each other. I have seen 4,000sf houses six feet apart.

I had 6 in a 2400 sq ft house. My son and I, my wife and 3 girls. While it was manageable, it was not ideal. We bought a house 15 months ago that was 2900 sq ft with an unfinished basement. It took me 2 months to build in the basement which included a full bath, 2 bedrooms(for my older girls) a home office for my wife and a big entertainment room. That made the house 4100 sq ft finished. I left one room (200 sq ft) unfinished for storage. The house in the perfect size for us. Not to big....not to cramped. I will say that had we not been in a financial position to make the move, we would still be fine in the other house which is now a rental. It's not like kids were sharing rooms but we did not have a basement for storage and everything was stacked in my garage so much we could only get one car in there.

Subtle bragging like a mofo going on in this thread.

Seems about right, I have 3 kids and about 650 sq ft per person. I didn't use a formula like that, but just found a house that had what we wanted.

The beauty of America is that people can buy whatever the frick house they want without queers like you whining about it.
Good job, you're killing America.

A family of four needs about 2200 minimum in today's society. But 2800 is more comfortable. I went with what I could afford and about how big I wanted to be able to grow into eventually and not move again. Go big or go home.
