On the eve of the LHSAA Convention, what would you do regarding the split?

Seems no one can come up with a plan to please LHSAA principals.
Can anyone here come up with a decent proposal?

put everyone back together and change the way they count enrollment.
To level the playing field, you'll have to count the students differently. They need to make the select school kids count as more. But don't force the selects to play up, let the publics play down. So they should just agree, or compromise I guess, to take the public school enrollment and only count 60% of it, or 3/5 if you like fractions.

Subtle.

I am puzzled, and I know you can answer this...
Why can't the privates play in a public league? I know St Stan OLA and St John's in MS are allowed to and do so by choice.
I also know that they are counted as 2 to 1 for students. Also they count from 6th grade up.

They used to until the split that some public schools wanted.

Reduce the number of playoff teams in 1A-3A public. It's too diluted.

They need to either put it back the way it was or split completely with 4 divisions for public schools, and 2 for private schools. They had waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many teams playing for state titles last year.

Remember the days when they had only 4 classifications for football in Louisiana?

I understand that. But my question is if the Privates pay their membership fees and get counted up in all activities (like they do OLA and St Stan) what is preventing them?
Is this a football only issue?

Keep 1A split and put public and private together for other divisions. The tax base for the 1A schools public schools can't match the funding and facilities of the private schools.

The proposals that would be decent do not matter. Here's why:
The principals do not care about what makes sense. They want their schools to win championships, even if they are diluted to the point of absurdity. So they appear ready to move into other sports other than football.
Friday, I believe the public school principals (a far bigger voting block than privates) will vote to separate baseball, softball and basketball just like football. They refused to delay the vote for the new LHSAA head to take power in March and try to negotiate a better solution because they do not want a better solution. These are "fairness" and "participation ribbon" types who don't care how stupid they are about to make the state's high school sports look.
So, will the private schools then split and form their own association? Public schools may rightfully not fear that since the collection of secular, Jewish, Catholic and protestant schools may simply not be able to get along with each other well enough to form their own from scratch. But IF they do it, the privates take the main LHSAA postseason sponsor (Sugar Bowl) and many others with them. The public schools would lose money in lots of areas with a true split, but they are not afraid to see how far they can push the private schools at this point.

I'm not even close to being someone who thinks everyone should be a winner, but its simply not fair to have schools that recruit play vs teams that cannot in the playoffs.
IMO magnet schools that can recruit should be lumped in with privates too.

Public and private schools recruit in all kinds of ways. It's silly to think otherwise.

Agreed. This isn't the NBA. Whatever size the divisions end up being you should have to be in the top-half of the total number of teams in your class/division to make the playoffs. The top teams get byes. A 4-6 team that just happens to be #32 out of 40-something teams should not be in the playoffs.
Examples:
64 team division = 32 playoff teams
48 team division = 24 playoff teams (top 8 get byes)
32 team division = 16 playoff teams

I think we don't see the split because southern LA publics want/need the privates to fill out their schedules and the privates bring more fans to their games.

Not in all cases, urban teams yes outside NOLA no.

IMO 4/3 is the best chance at something that makes sense...
i could deal with the football split if it was framed along the lines of safety concerns and 150 pound farm boys going up against John Curtis 300 pound D1 recruits...
but other sports don't have those inherent concerns but yet they want to split anyway
back in the day before Tommy Henry called schools "sports camps, principals used to be football people, mostly men who were former players and coaches. nowadays, i bet a much higher percentage of them are liberals, and you know how our schools espouse political correctness nowadays. it was only right for underprivileged schools to separate themselves along those lines. never mind the great competition public and private schools always had

play the games in the regular season, not the playoffs.

i don't get this logic from Destrehan's principal...
quote:
At the time, Destrehan principal Stephen Weber said he hoped the vote to split other sports did not happen. But if it did, he knew what path he would take.
“I am going to vote for the (further) split,” said Weber. “But I am hoping it doesn’t come to that.”
