I think Chavis made a huge mistake

I don't care how skilled someone is as a DC- when your players have to stay on the field as long as they do in a program like A&M, there's a good chance you will have issues. I believe the fatigue factor is unavoidable, and will become an issue for his defense, due to Sumlin's system on the other side of the ball.

Well, assuming a DC can recruit some good players, being on the field a lot is a problem if you have to hold teams to 10-14 points. If Sumlin can get that offense rolling again though, then a DC could be highly "successful" giving up 21 per game.
So, it's relative.

I agree.
But, it still makes one wonder whether he was confident that LSU was going to win anything in the next few years.
If he were confident of improvement, I think he stays.

His contract is guaranteed for three years, which is when he wants to retire. He'll be over half a million dollars richer, after taxes, when he retires. While I agree with your astute football analysis, this is not a mistake.

He left strictly over his contract situation. Strictly.

He may be wrong, but he clearly voted with his feet because it doesn't appear dollars were an issue.

It sounds like he didn't want to be tied to Miles so maybe or maybe he just wanted Alleva to trust in him independently.

He probably woke up shitting himself and realizing he made a huge mistake.

Have any of you given thought to the idea that maybe Chavis was tired of working his arse off to keep the Tigers in contention and not getting any help from the offensive side of the ball?
Sure, the defense was not as stout as some years, but it was pretty darn good most of the time he was here.
So he wanted a raise and security and they didn't give it to him after 6 years of good service.
The guy is 58 years old, I doubt he really wanted to have to pick everything up and move somewhere else, but felt he had no choice.

Only time will well. He made a good decision before when he left Tennessee for the LSU job. That concerns me a bit to be honest, but I am not going to jump off the cliff like a lot of people around here. Filling the position with a quality hire and salvaging this recruiting class would go a long way in bolstering my optimism.

I respect Chief but the more I think about it, I think it's for the good.
It makes me sick that we out played Bama at home this year and in 2012 but we lost because we didn't stop them on their last drive.
Ditto with Ole Miss in 2013.
He's a good DC but there are others, although a small number, that are just as good or even better. Time to put him behind us and go out and get the best DC who is available.

Well if we are to believe some folks, Miles really wanted him gone and finessed him into leaving using A&M as the motivator while using Alleva as the bad guy/good guy team.
And had already spoken with CP about coming,
If this is true then Miles' stock goes up in my eyes, now if he can be as skilled with the QB issues.

A possible Chavis perspective:
1. Great offensive mind at A&M
2. A roster full of NFL defensive talent.
3. Lower expectations and maybe more appreciation.
4. More Money and longer contract.
People have transferred with alot less on the table.

You guys are right in that I admit I'm looking at this from a bit of a selfish standpoint. But I have my doubts about him enjoying the same level of success there as he did at LSU.
Anyway- Does anyone think there is a legitimate chance LSU would hire Orgeron? I know he's never been a DC, but the man is an excellent recruiter and considered by many to be one of the better defensive minds in the college game.....

As old as he is, why would he really give a shite about this aspect, as long as he's doing his job as DC with no further aspirations beyond that (which seems to be the consensus that he has none).

who gives a shite. Good riddance. This program needs a shakeup. Now time to shake up the offense side of the ball. Cam Cameroon, your on the clock.

He doesn't go across country like Haley, Raymond, wilson do. He hasn't changed his defensive scheme in 20 years. So I don't see how his job was that fricking hard.

Orgeron is one of those guys from Louisiana that has always had something against LSU. He will never coach there.
