quote:What matters to me is truth; plain and simple. Whether the truth can be verified provisionally or not doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things. If there is any sort of verification that happens that proves or disproves the truth of religious belief, I don't think it should be marginalized. I think it is foolish to write off belief (in general) because it cannot necessarily be proven in the moment, especially since belief is such a commonly-used aspect of life, even for those who denigrate it.
I just don't think it's meaningful to describe this provisional verifiability as being equal to what we call "verifiable"

Well, you've been chosen as a scientologist then. Best of luck to ya.

Have we decided if I need to apologize to religious groups yet? I'm on pins and needles here.

I think the spirit of S.E.C. Crazy just entered your body.

And FT knows this so I'm wondering why he is wanting me to provide him with a definition of faith?
I can have faith in you as a person, and believe you'll succeed, but that isn't the same sort of faith that I place in God.

God does not exist to me because there is nothing observable to verify he exists.
No, you told me that atheists live by facts.
Atheism is the belief that there is no God. Prove that to me with facts!
Now don't come here and tell me about evolution, plate tectonics, DNA, the solar system, etc. and say this is somehow connected with atheism because it isn't. Maybe in your mind, some of this stuff disproves things in the bible or the existence of the God of the bible, but again, it doesn't prove there is no God. And since atheism is the belief that there is no God, until you die, there will never be any definitive proof that he doesn't exist.
Doesn't sound like " the end" to me.

No observable facts = no belief

An atheist bases things on facts. A Christian bases things on beliefs. Facts are verifiable. Beliefs are unverifiable.
Here is something else for you to ponder on porkchop. Some scientist of old lived their entire lives from cradle to grave not knowing anything about microscopic life. To them, it didn't exist and that was fact. But it turned out it wasn't fact.
Then there were scientist who lived their whole lives thinking that if a man was sick and you extracted enough blood out of his body, he would get well again. Of course, many died during bloodlettings. To this scientist, this was a fact, but it wasn't.
Then their were scientist that lived their entire lives from cradle to grave thinking the earth was flat. They never knew anything else, and to them, this was fact. But it wasn't fact.
Then there were those who lived their entire lives from cradle to grave thinking the Tasmanian Tiger was extinct. To them, this was fact. But when one was later discovered and filmed, this too became a non fact.
So to sit here and say that you have facts that God doesn't exist is very naive. You have no such facts and never will. But one day you will die also and you will get a chance to see if your facts are indeed factual.

The issue here isn't belief or lack thereof, it's the object of belief.
Even atheists believe in a lot of things. They just don't believe that God exists.

You keep putting things like this, but I don't see anyone saying they can prove god doesn't exist. They are saying they don't have any facts to prove he exists.
And this argument would go back to the the dragon in the garage or teapot in space argument.

He said atheists live by facts. I want to know what they are. And I want to separate those things he relies on scientifically from atheism, because it has nothing to do with atheism.
The only thing that defines atheists is their belief that there is no God. Now prove it.
