Getting Fired for Facebook Posts

I have a theory that the vast majority of the world's problems can be solved with five or six simple truths. I'm not sure what all of them are, but one is definitely "There are consequences for your actions."
I was just grabbing a bite to eat at a local place and caught a glimpse of a news story. Not sure what store or where, but a guy was fired from his job at a department store for making a Facebook post along the lines of this:
"When an unarmed black teen is shot by police, then we should shoot a decorated white police officer on his doorstop in front of his family."
Now, whether you believe that or not is not the story. The story is that his employer decided that he was not fit to work for the company if he would make that comment.
Of course he's threatening to sue, his right to free speech was violated, etc. And some attorney is going to take this case and now it seems that he will be able to raise money on a GoFundme page or something. He may be rewarded with a payday that will probably be more than this guy's total lifetime earning potential.
When did we get here as a society?

Like someone said in that Nazi/Cop thread yesterday.
If you are going to stand up on the soapbox and throw grenades around like that, don't be surprised when you get the attention you were obviously seeking.
Even if it is from your employer.

Since when is an employee given a right to free speech?

a) The employee should have been smarter and not trash
b) companies should not trouble themselves with what their employees do or say outside of work as long as it doesn't effect their jobs.

This is just an ignorant comment. He should be fired.

for some reason I was under the assumption that an employer can fire an employee at any time or place with no reason or any reason and thats ok.
They might have to pay unemployment checks until they got a job or whatever but it's not illegal.
am i mistaken?

Maybe this guy had a history of saying things like this and he was warned multiple times? Or maybe he had issues in the work place as a result of his controversial opinions. I dont find any reason why he needed to say that anyways even if he thought it. Just seems like he should have kept it to himself. Maybe the employer had other reasons to fire him and that just made it a good time to follow through.

The general populace are morans when it comes to the concept of protected speech.
Read up on it your ownselves if you are not familiar. It is not terribly complex.

We had an employee get called in for remarks on her FB page that were pretty damaging to her. She was talking trash about co workers and the company. She was on her 90 day probation. She wasn't fired bit the damage was done. She quit three days later

tl;dr, but responding solely to your subject, witnessed someone get fired a few days after being hired because said person's facebook page had some pretty racy photos on it.
So it do happen.
So it do happen.

Gradual progression over time. It isn't like all the Liberals have been voted into office because people don't agree with them.

Meh. You're making a lot of assumptions.
If this guy lives in a right to work state, his employer and any court will politely tell him to GFH.
Even if it does go to trial, he still has to win and some jury has to award him damages.
I think society is mostly fine.

I always google a person if I am interviewing them for a job. One guy had "pimping and partying" as his interests, he did not get the job.
