My favorite people on this planet are the ones with PhD's who don't make a big deal about it. It means they are really smart and humble. It's a great combination for a human being to have. And I've seen these qualities in really shy people as well as extremely outgoing people.

I've witnessed my BIL do this several times! He's actually a DO, not a MD. I still don't quite know wht the difference is but I do know that he went that route after flunking out of pharmacy school.

I find it uncomfortable for me to introduce myself as Dr. Tiger1014. So my approach with patients in the hospital is to introduce myself as Tiger1014, one of the doctors that will be taking care of you

its pretty douchey if its in a casual conversation

This and really douchey if you aren't an MD/DO. PhD's and dentist don't deserve the title doctor.

Was at a meeting once with some medical doctors and one PhD.

Everyone writes their first name on their name tags except for the PhD who writers "dr "last name".

So for the whole meeting we all had to call that one person by dr lastname. No one was rude ab it but it was silly.

Are you my grandfather? We named our son Andrew, but call him Drew. Except for my grandfather, because he knew I didn't want him to be called Andy. Andy it was!

Under the widely accepted rules of etiquette , only an MD/DO is expected to addressed as Dr. Yes, it is published in several etiquette guidelines.

A PhD, chiro, etc. expecting to be addressed as Dr is erroneous in their self perspective.

My brother in law does this occassionally to people and I call him a douche for it. It's pretty hilarious to see how people react though.

this topic always reminds me of an old gentleman i met while he was picking up metal from a trash pile. we introduced ourselves and i said "nice to meet you mr. smith". he then tells me he pastors a church in town. i said "oh, then it's Brother Smith."

he said "i don't brother myself much."

Pretentious here. It's a big deal in Europe, though.

This, especially in Germany and Austria. And if someone has two Ph.D.'s (rare, but it happens) you'll get corrected for not saying "doctor doctor".

It would be cool to call Dr Dre mister Dre and see what ensues.

Only MDs are addressed as "doctor" outside of the job.

I have a friend who is a Pharmacist, he got married 5 months after graduating and at the end of the ceremony the announcement was "and I now present you Dr. and Mrs. X. It was definitely cringe-worthy. I wouldn't even do that shite if I was an MD.

Also, to whoever said that MD's are the only doctors referred to as Dr. outside of a professional setting, I think it's BS to even refer to them as Dr. when they aren't practicing.
