I do remember seeing a few weeks ago him agreeing to a deal with a big buy out

If it is indeed $7.5 mill, then I can't see any scenario in which UF brings him in. I could be dead wrong.

@FootballScoop: There are a lot of excellent football coaches out there that just aren’t the right cultural fit. Mac is a western type guy.

@FootballScoop: Last thing, I don’t know Foley; but those that do tell me he would choke before stroking a $7.5 million buyout check for Mac.

@FootballScoop: Trying to be very clear, I’m not doubting Pat’s reporting. He says a group at Florida has vetted Mac and he’s on a list. That makes sense.

CSU said that McElwain, who is about to begin his third season with the Rams and originally was operating under a five-year contract, had agreed to a new five-year deal that takes him through 2018. His base salary increases from $1.35 million to $1.5 million. McElwain's buyout increases to $7.5 million

quote:

Asked about the $7.5 million buyout, McElwain said with tongue in cheek: "The way I look at that, maybe the only chance we have is maybe Bill Gates hiring me."

He turned serious and said, "It's flattering and it's really positive that we can get the support of this campus and this town and up and down the front range."

He paused, then smiled and asked: "Is that how much it is?"

I've read he has a $7.5 million buyout. Anybody know if that's correct? Also, isn't UF on the hook for $8.4 million for the current coaching staff? If all that's true, that would be $15.9 million before McElwain receives his first dollar from UF. That's steep.

Any assistant that gets another job does not receive a buyout from UF, so chances are almost all will get nothing. Muschamp has a $6 million buyout that is paid over the next 5 years. McElwain's buyout is huge, but when you consider any other coach would demand a much larger salary it may not be that big a deal if he is the guy Foley wants. That said, I'm not convinced Foley wants him that bad.

That certainly makes it more feasible.

McElwain-- talk about hiring a guy off one decent season-- hey would Florida get to take all the Bama transfers as well because looking into the guy he seems to be carried by Bama transfers in a way that is unsustainable at Florida.

Would be a good hire. Freeze wasn't a home run hire and a lot of people even questioned it. Look how it's worked out for us though.

Mac is a hell of a coach. Florida could go much worse. The 7.5 million buyout is steep, but buyouts have codicils. Kiffin's did. Might have something in there about an SEC or top program.

ETA: I would be scared of Mac at Florida.

Saban disciples have been hit and miss (Muschamp, Dooley, Bobby Williams, etc...). I'd be leery.

Dooley and Williams aren't though I agree no way he's not better than them.

Given that, why shouldn't Florida just grab Freeze?
