My boss: "So are you doing anything for the holidays?"

Me: "No, not really. Are you and your family going out of town?" (

Someone mentioned recently that they thought he was heading somewhere.)

My boss: "No, my family and I are staying in-town because my ______ is pregnant."

(I wasn't really paying attention and I didn't hear what he said. The other person I alluded to had said something about my boss boarding one of his pets so I assumed he said 'dog'.)

Me: "Oh, so you're dog is pregnant?"

My boss: "No, my daughter..."

Keep in mind that my boss is extremely religious and very conservative. His daughter is 20-years-old, is not married, and has already expressed that she does not love the father.

Is she pregnant by the dog? If not, it's not that awkward.

Oh well. shite happens.

Ask him when her baby shower is and show up with a wrapped gift.

Dude, your boss likes you enough to reveal what many would consider to be a close personal matter.

I hope you were polite to him.

Not too awkward. When you see him next, engage him in banter about sex of the baby, etc. mention birth of Jesus in the same timeframe, special gift from God, etc., and you are solid.

Is this the part where we make fun of the man that, despite his convictions attracting ridicule, is going to bring a newborn into the world and support it and his daughter?

Not as awkward as this moment...

Good friend of mine saw one of our mutual friends from HS at the gym one day. Asked him how his 18 month old son was doing. "Welp _______, turns out he wasn't mine. Him and his mother have since moved to Florida."

That ducks to hear that his daughter doesn't love you. Will you at least get to be in the child's life?

This 100%.

The guy is telling you something personal. Everyone misunderstands people at times. From now on though actually pay attention to what people are saying. Use it as an opportunity to become closer to him and build a contact for the future that you can use as a reference or a jumping point
