Also can someone explain when you can hunt with a bolt action rifle in MS? Is there a split season for modern weapons?

The 10 day primitive season ends Saturday. After November 30 you can hunt with any legal weapon even during primitive weapon so long as you are on private property.

.35 Whelen is my personal favorite for PW.

7-08 from Saturday on though.

Marlin 336 is my favorite. When I take long shots, I have a Winchester M70 in ought 6. I want a Tikka in 308 though

Primitive is my bow because I don't have a muzzle loader

During primitive deer season 35 Whelen.

For the rest of season .243.

Bow

I rifle hunt during the rifle season (will use the bow sometimes also) but when it's archery or primitive I take the string and stick

I think 35 Whelan is the superior caliber for primitive. I use a 444 Marlin because 35 Whelan isn't (or wasn't at the time) legal for primitive in Louisiana.

.50 Cal Hawken for me. No scope, either. Friend of mine has already killed three 8 pointers with his flintlock .58.

Yeah 35 whelen is a great caliber, even during rifle season where your shots are less the 200 yds

35 Whelen makes 444 and 45-70 look silly

I use .50 cal muzzleloader with iron sights because I want to hunt with something that's actually somewhat primitive (arguably)
