Yes. Breakaway facemasks that protect the player from injury.

That makes sense. Plus it makes it harder for an opponent to get away with a facemask.
So far the refs are batting .500 on that call against LSU's opponents with the incriminating evidence right in their, um, faces.

How does a breakaway face mask make sense?
If the face mask gives way it opens the player up to direct contact to the facial bones, eyes, nose, teeth, jaw and facial and head injuries. Maybe they are using a new plastic piece to connect the helmet to the facemask that failed, but there is no way that a "breakaway" face mask protects a player from injury.

The real problem here is no NCAA rule about facemask replacement. LSU had to burn a timeout because Jennings had no facemask and Harris wasn't ready. The game should be stopped until the facemask is replaced.

They need to put an alarm on the facemask so the blind-assed ref standing there is alerted that there should be a penalty called.

it most certainly does
it would prevent twisting of the neck if the facemask broke away after a certain amount of force
I'm sure the refs have been instructed to blow the whistle once the facemaks comes off, just like when a helmet comes off

Did anyone else listen to the equipment manager on AFR yesterday when Gordy was sitting in for Matt? I could have sworn he said they are designed not to break but actually absorb into the helmet from a face mask blow and believes the reason they are being torn away is because they are not screwed into the helmet.

And increase facial trauma.

Helmets have been ripped off and not much of this has occurred.

No penalty when Jennings lost his. Oh wait....that was vs Bama.

Helmets are ripped off all the time and I have not hear of any serious facial injuries that have resulted.

I see entire helmets popping off more and more each year...never once have seen anyone get knocked out or suffer an injury. I have see 3 facemasks ripped off...no injuries.

Like you said, its the Revo 360. Both my sons where it now in HS, and the buttons that hold on the mask have to be locked in right, or they will come off easily.

Breakaway masks are you kidding me?? He was kidding... if you pull a players facemask off and he keeps running what the frick do you think will happen when a shoulder comes in and finishes him off? Crush his face.
Guy was being sarcastic
there have actually been studies and tests done by the concussion people in the NFL that conclude that concussions would decrease by going back to the leather helmet/no face mask

Nope, we have had these special facemasks for a while, they are described in great detail in the "Secret Playbook"

The breakaway facemask was originally designed so that the SEC refs can clearly call a face mask penalty against our opponents.
50% is a solid improvement

No need to laugh. The concussion epidemic started when players were coached to use the helmet as a weapon on both offense and defense.
