I think Ferrell tries too hard and his movies are over the top. Chevy is naturally funny and doesn't need to try or use the outlandish stunts that Ferrell does.

Agreed.
I love Ferrell, but he's essentially playing the same character or a version of him in all of his movies, and he can't do the straight man or ironically funny family man role.
Chevy Chase was great at playing the put-upon goofball dad in the Vacation movies.

Will Ferrell is one of the biggest try hard douche bags in film. Really a Middle Class Adam Sandler. His collection of movies made for simpletons is no where near the comedy standards that Chevy Chase has starred in.
Really no contest on this. But morons who like screaming "OH SWEET ODENS PUSSY SWORD" or something dumb like that will think Will>Chevy

I like Ferrell sometimes, and think he's a funny guy, but it definitely does seem like he's always trying to be overly funny, whereas it seemed to come a lot more naturally to old school Chevy. Also, Chevy back in the day was pretty dry and sarcastic-assholish, which is right up my alley.

Only movie that I really care of Ferrell's was Old School. He played that part to a "T" and you know it.

I'm not sure I completely agree but that was funny to read. I think there's probably an obvious generational difference at work here too - FWIW my favorite CC moment was probably at a SNL event with the camera on him where he intentionally spilled popcorn all over the Donald.

This statement suggests that Adam Sandler is some sort of high standard.
It also reiterates my post that Ferrell simply out worked him and for at least a 5 year period he was the hardest working actor out there, while putting his best work out there. Chase couldn't pull off that workload now or later.
Look at Chase's talk show, the guy couldn't ad lib a fart (Copyright Johnny Carson).
Chase has Fletch and Clark Griswold. Caddyshack was not his film. Ferrell put out modern classic comedies while still starring on SNL during the year.....thus the question of the OP-who had the better run- the answer is Will Ferrell.

Chevy may as well be a sarcastic Jerry Lewis with his heavy over-reliance on slapstick sight gags in most of his 80s flicks.
I'm going to have to take Will Ferrell here. Does he rely too much on being a buffoon for many of his comedic roles? Yes. But since he isn't a mega a-hole IRL its much easier to accept his mediocre work than it is CC's.
Also, WF completely owns CC as a writer. CC's best roles after SNL were him riffing on other people's work. WF at least had a hand in writing both Anchorman flicks, Talladega Nights, and Step Brothers.
Then when you get into what WF has done in a producer role vs CC and its not even close to fair.

If Zoolander doesn't count for WF I don't think you can count Caddyshack for CC either. It's not like CC is the star or even most memorable character from Caddyshack.
