You don't think Saban is a good leader??? Because he's not warm and cuddly???

Good god, man. Regardless of the warmth of a person, the true evidence of leadership is whether a guy gets those under him to consistently perform at their highest level. This is true for coaches, military officers, CEOs, etc.

Saban's teams consistently play with intensity, intelligence, poise, and with precise execution. Clearly, his players have bought in to what he's selling, year after year.

Yea, he's not warm and fuzzy. But to me, he's one hell of a leader.

You are kidding....right? I don't know of anyone who wants to have dealings with an "a-hole".

And if winning is the only thing that should be important to fans, then why do some here get all pissy with Miles.

Th is sounds more like a reporter intentionally parking in Saban's spot to make himself the centerpiece of a story. People go apeshite if someone at their apartment complex parks in their spot. It sounds like Saban showed nothing more than mild aggravation - despite it being a reporter. And we know how much love coaches have for reporters. That being said, I still think Saban can be an a-hole - I just don't see it in this case.

ecause winning championships is NOT all that really matters in college. this "noise" you refer to is damn important; graduating players, esp the non NFL guys, building character, representing LSU, a university, with class and dignity and running an honest program.

if you are not an LSU student or graduate I understand that LSU is your "professional" team, but to me and many other alum LSU is our alma mater's team. big difference.

saban should be in the pro's if winning at all costs is all that matters. oh, now I remember, he failed in the pro's.

Ok so if LSU would HYPOTHETICALLY go 7-5, 6-6, 5-7 the next three years, Les Miles should keep his job because he is a "good person", "graduates players", "runs a clean program", etc ???

YES winning is all that matters. That's why someone like Les Miles or Nick Saban is paid $4+ million. All the stupid "oh but he is such a good person" garbage means nothing unless you are completely delusional.

The two aren't mutually exclusive.

But since you must....Mike Leach had 10 straight winning seasons at Texas Tech and was fired because of his off the field leadership failures.

Golfer: don't know why you're sighing.

If, as you say, leadership abilities include personality and engagement, please list your top 5 or 10 traits of great leaders. I want to see where personality and engagement are on your list.

So you didn't read the part where Jacques said he parked there because it said "reserved for faculty" and it wasn't a school day?

I was working at Big Ten media day in Chicago in the late 90s. All of the Big Ten head coaches were assembling for a group picture. Every coach but Nick. He finally arrives 15 minutes late. Paterno says to Saban loud enough for quite a few people to hear, "Do you try to be an a-hole?"

Saban - 15 minutes late to a bullshite group picture taking session.

Paterno - probably the most egotistical coach and phony person of all time within the college coaching ranks. Couldn't stand to step down and not continue to rack up wins on his resume, all the while not knowing the names of his players, not actually coaching them during the week or on game days. Just watched while wearing diapers in between naps. While collecting millions in compensation and spinning the false narrative that he was but a meager man, living in the same house for 50 years. And while presenting himself as something quite larger than simply a football coach; indeed, an educator and leader of young men, he knowingly allowed young boys to be raped on his campus and in his football building... for more than a decade. And when finally caught, what did the intelligent leader and educator say? "But, but, but, I didn't know! I'm just the football coach. I told my boss!" Paterno is a pathetic piece of shite.

But sure, great anecdote to bring up here in this thread. Compared to Paterno, Saban is definitely a scumbag.

Sound to me like Saban didn't take into account the other coaches who were there on time and wasted 15 minutes waiting on him.

Way to distract from the point by exaggerating what anyone said about warm and cuddly.

I could not disagree with you more. Some people in this world make a lot of money doing human trafficking. So if your boss teaches you the best and most high functioning way to kidnap, transport and pimp people out, then it automatically qualifies him to be a good leader???

No, this culture sells itself short. It isnt just about being good at your job, efficient, productive and hard working.

It is also about ETHICS. What happened to them? Thats what ensure that people do not abuse their power at the detriment of others.

What about ALTRUISM? What about using your power for good. This is not just about making these guys the best football players.

These are college kids, and this team plays for a learning UNIVERSITY. No one is more recognized or representative of a big time football school than the head coach.

Miles teaches his players so much more than just football. He teaches them family life is important, he teaches them how not to throw people under the bus, Miles is extremely loyal, he is passionate, and has defended his players in the media vehemently, as has shown great leadership skills by diving on the sword protecting those around him.

The players consistently talk about how much they love their coach, but moreso understand how great a man he is.

Greatness can never be achieved only on the football field. Great men, are so much more than their accomplishments.

Anyone who truly doesnt see what Im saying, I pity you. It takes having a great male in your own life to recognize one when you see one, and Miles is a great leader, Saban is a great coach.

One will be remembered for their impact on others lives, the other will be remembered by sports fans, and trophies....

A basketball program can be ultra successful with a Bobby Knight type coach; but then, a Dean Smith type can be just as successful. Same with football: you can win with a Saban type or a Les Miles type. As a player, a fan, an alum, I'd much rather have a Dean Smith/Les Miles type coach than either a Knight or Saban.Being a leader of a college football team goes way beyond winning a lot of games. Ask any of the mulitude of student workers who worked in the football/athletic office when Saban was there. He was hated because he treated the workers there like shite. One of his many a-hole like rules was that no one was allowed to talk to him if their paths crossed in a hall. My friend's daughter, an 18 yr old freshman, merely said "good morning, Coach" her first day on the job & got severely reprimanded by her boss later in the morning. Saban ignored her & walked on, but obviously reported her. And there are stories after stories like this, both in & outside of the athletic dept. Saban had a local store bring him arms full of nice clothes for his wife, his way to Christmas shop. And would raise holy hell if he did not like the choices. I saw Coach Miles doing his own shopping the last Sat. before Christmas.Nothing to do with football? True. But an a-hole is an a-hole is an a-hole. I choose Coach Miles.
