Is Peyton Manning's TD Pass record the most prestigious record in sports?

They were debating this on the radio this morning, what is the most prestigious record in sports
The two guys agreed that its the all time TD pass record, and I disagree, I still think its the all time Home Run record, even though its tainted. The reason being is everyone, even non-baseball fans, know who the record holder for Home Run King is, its general knowledge such as the sky being blue or water being wet
Hell I couldn't have told you who had the TD pass record before last night and I consider myself to be sports savy

Home runs is a way bigger deal. Even season home runs is bigger.

It's hard to talk about 'most prestigious' when you're crossing sports. Sports like baseball, football, basketball, should have their own distinctive most prestigious record.

It's not even the most prestigious in football.
Since the NFL is now Glorified Arena Football, Favre/Manning/Brady/Brees are shattering all the records and a new one gets set every other year. It's very watered down.
I think Eric Dickerson's rushing record is The One (at least for football), followed by Emmitt Smith's.

Joe Dimaggo's consecutive hit streak is #1

I would be willing to bet that more people - today - could tell you that Peyton Manning is the all-time TD leader than could tell you Barry Bonds is the all-time HR leader. Bonds is an afterthought.
ETA: I'm not saying TDs are more prestigious, or not. I'm just saying your justification for HRs being more prestigious (i.e., that more people know about it) is not true.

TD passes can't be the most prestigious IMO because it's too reliant on someone else. And not that it's not impressive or very worthy of respect.
IMO Favre starting 299 is "more impressive" of a record than Manning throwing 509.

That's just because Peyton just broke it. Plenty of people didn't know Favre had the record before this week.
If Alex Rodriguez was breaking Bonds' record right now, everyone would know about it.

It's an amazing record, but IMO hardest to break =/= most prestigious.
I actually think Bond's 7 MVPs or Clemens's 7 Cy Youngs is more prestigious than the all time TD or HR record, but I know I'm in the minority on that one

And Clemens would have 8 if the Astros gave him any run support.

Well no shite, it happened 12 hours ago. A lot of the adults I talk to at work had no idea who the old TD leader was, but most new BB was the all time leader in homeruns

Well yeah, I mean it's only on every news station and in every paper and on every website this morning. That might have something to do with it. Good call.

I've never even thought about all time touchdown leader until last night and I've been watching football since 1977.
It isn't prestigious because it will be broken again within the next 20 years. It's far easier to throw for touchdowns now than 20 years ago.

I completely agree. Although he was a dominant player, Dimaggio's record is not a symbol of dominance. It is a hot streak. Bond's career MVP's and Clemen's Cy Young's mark a career of dominance.

How about Nolan Ryan's 7 no-hitters or Clemens/Wood/Clemens 20 Ks?

The baseball records are more prestigious because stats are easier compared across generations in baseball. (thats why all the purists are pissed about steroids tainting the numbers.)
Football has never been that way. Its s totally different game played today than 50 years ago. (Last night they were talking about Sammy Baugh leading the league in TD passes, punting average, and interceptions ) Totally different game.

I agree with the rushing record being more prestigious. Passing stats have just become so inflated it's hard to take them serious anymore even tho the TD record is obviously a great accomplishment.

Wilt's 100 point game has to be in the conversation. Dimaggio's hit streak, Pete Rose's hit record. and the Home run record (although like i said, its tainted)

I don't like baseball but all of their records are a bigger deal

The GOAT is the only player in NFL history to have scored 200+ TDs. Due to durability and consistency, it's hard to imagine anyone threatening that any time soon.
Calvin Johnson can't seems to stay as healthy as Rice did, and Tomlinson faded pretty quickly once he got into his 30's.
