Korkie, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

From a business model standpoint never occurred to me they'd make it that easy. They got a ton of upload tools but nothing that says download.

13 gigs or so downloading now.

I use a two-layer strategy.

For onsite storage, Acronis backup to a second drive has worked well. For offline I uses SOS Backup. SOS has two great features - their online bandwidth is high so it won't take a year and a day to get my files back, plus they claim to store every version of every file forever. I've tested this with a couple of random files I deleted two years ago and got them back.

But whatever you do, make sure you spend a weekend doing a real disaster recovery. Literally unplug all your drives, plug in a new one that's big enough (they're cheap and worth the exercise), and then recover. If you haven't walked through this your backup may be useless. At the very least you get to work through the holes in your backup plan with your original files still intact.

Thats why I mirror important stuff to google drive and dropbox. Always need something offsite for the really important stuff. I find a RAID 1 NAS with cloud mirroring to be perfect for me. If you are cheap, use rsync to mirror everything from your pc to a cloud service.

Thanks for all your responses.

Much of it is over my head, or maybe I'm just too lazy to explore or practice being "safe enough."

This is what I'm thinking, based on your suggestions:

1. Get a hard drive to store raw video that I can share with my friend, and vice-versa.

2. Get a Carbonite or such account to back up my computer, and to store selected (or even, all) of my video files.

I need to look into Carbonite. I think a few TBs with Google Drive is only like $100/yr, thought about doing that.

Right now I have a 2 TB desk external hard drive I use to store my files, and 2 separate 1 TB each portable externals I use to backup that I store at the office.

I'm guessing one doesn't need a hard drive "especially for a Mac" just because one has a Mac?

I use a USB3 dual dock and a bunch of bare drives that are typically retirees from my desktops. I did buy a couple of 2 TB Hitachis solely for backup when they were super-cheap before the flood and ensuing duopoly. All are fully Bitlockered and were TrueCrypted before that.

I have one backup set on site and another at the bank. They are all file-based backups so I can easily compare my local data to a backup set, which I try to do after rotating a set home. I've never found a discrepancy, but how would I know which was the good file if I did? To deal with that, I started maintaining a database of file hashes.

Your holiest of holies should be stored in additional ways, e.g. thumb drives, CDs, paper, etc. It would be damn inconvenient to lose my Keepass database, for example, and it's small enough to fit on anything.

3 TB on Google will cost you $360/yr .

That's pretty cheap. That's only for files in the user folder on a single PC though, right? Obviously they are trying to deter you from using external drives and NAS's. Does that really include unlimited videos?

Could it also ID duplicates?

Carbonite's $59 plan only allows you to sync what's on your internal hard drive, not any externals. You pay more to do that. Cloud storage is a great idea but never put all of your eggs in one basket. Keep copies in Dropbox, Google Drive, etc. instead of just one service.

The rule of thumb for things you really want to save is 3-2-1. 3 copies of everything, 2 different storage mediums, and at least 1 copy off site somewhere else (bank vault, friend's house, etc.)

It's going to be really interesting in the next few decades as people can't retrieve their kid's photos because a hard drive had a head crash, they can't locate the original drive, etc. Most people are extremely lax in their data management policies.

Depending how much video you're going to be moving around, you could look at a NAS, network attached storage device, or Drobo (A pretty simple to use version of a NAS) as well as maybe a simple hard drive you keep offsite. It doesn't exactly fit the plan but is a way better option than most people keep. If you want to be even safer:
1. Back up everything to the Drobo or NAS.
2. Make two copies to other external drives or such.
3. Take one of those copies off site somewhere and rotate it with the other regularly.

Super lax here, but trying to remedy that. Not so easy to do, when you struggle at file management and barely, if at all, understand the mediums.

If I needed something to do, I'd look at starting a biz doing just this for people.

I'm going to try the Carbonite and an external hard drive, and maybe google Drobo and NAS.
