get one of those $300 50" hisense or $400 55" hisense LEDs and be done with it.

mine is incredibly lightweight and takes maybe 5 minutes total to unscrew the stand, bring it downstairs & plug in on the deck.

with chromecast attached to the tv i haven't even needed to run HDMI out from my DISH (even though its available).

i just bring it in after the game is over.

Not the 'only' time, but close.

How will they know? As long as you use it in the specified operating temperature range and you don't expose it directly to the elements they should honor the warranty. It's only a 12 month warranty. Odds are high that it will last a year.

The blacks are usually darker and the refresh rates are usually smoother. However, the glossy screen does no good in brightly lit areas so they aren't that good in sunny rooms.

LED's have light bleed issues. They are a huge step up from LCD's but they are still not quite there. I'm not that familiar with fully array however so I can't speak on them.

Who cares if it is lighter. Are you holding it up? Can you really tell it's that much thinner from the front? Electricity usage is problem though with Plasmas.

When I was speaking of "only time" I was referring to picture only. Not things like electricity consumption and thinness.

Usually yes, but LED full arrays are better than edge-lit ones, because the back-lighting can be controlled per screen area.

LED is already Pretty Good here, and getting better all the time.

They are lighter, which means they cost less to ship (yes, this is reflected in the price you pay in-store or online, even with "free" shipping). Also, especially for outdoor use where you may bring the TV in and out weekly or a few times a year, weight is a real concern.

If it's mounted on a wall, you'd be surprised how much more room you have, and how many fewer head bumps you'll have, if the TV sticks out 3" vs 6".

Is the screen door effect still a problem on larger plasmas? Phosphor trails? How about sharpness? Are plasmas improving here?

I said the war has been won for a few reasons. #1 LCD outsells plasma about 10:1, and getting worse. #2 LCD tech is improving much faster than plasma. #3 There aren't as many plasma options as LCD, so you can almost always find a better deal for a particular size/quality going LCD. #4 Plasma sets can only be made in a limited range of sizes, while LCD tech applies to screens ranging from the smallest to the largest. This naturally leads to more investment in LCD tech, and picture quality will continue to improve while prices continue to fall.

Plasma is still obviously a valid option for people who aren't satisfied with the picture quality of LCDs, but there are many areas where LCD beats plasma. Size options, price, and yes, weight/thinness, electricity use and heat output (however small the difference might be). Not to mention the picture on LCDs made the last few years is pretty fricking good.

The main problem with plasma other than depth and weight is that it is a dying technology. With Panasonic, Samsung and LG out of the game it's just about down to cheap Chinese knockoffs which will not give the performance we saw from the great Panasonic and Pioneer plasmas of the past. There is simply no need to invest in a technology that is on deaths doorstep.

All this is because the LCD is cheaper to make and provides better margins. Samsung has been pushing the LCD hard for a very long time and it shows when you ask the normal consumer. Everyone always wants a Samsung LED. Because they are the brightest and most vivid. I believe the tech is more focused on LED/LCD because the big brands wanted it to be. Most consumers don't know what a correct picture looks like. They will always say the corrected picture is too dark and not bright or vivid enough. That is why the Plasma didn't sell.

ETA: I do own a LED because I do believe that the tech is better but the picture is not, on a value sense. LED will get there but it's not yet. LCD/LED's tech ceiling is definitely higher than plasma IMO.

I agree. I have the Vizio M series and it is very stunning. The blacks are almost as black as my Samsung Plasma.

depends on what you're watching.

i ran an extra HDMI outside for DISH and use the DISH smartphone app to control the TV.

*HOWEVER* i haven't used the HDMI in probably 6+ months because I have a chromecast installed in back of it so i can do netflix, PLEX and Watch ESPN.

so far those things (plus music) have accounted for 100% of what i want to do on the tv. view my local media, watch NETFLIX and watch LSU on ESPN.
