I refuse to buy foreign

This is a great website for local processors and where to find american caught shrimp, specifically gulf shrimp.

Grocery stores i sell to, do buy Florida pinks. But most buy Black Tigers from Indo and Bangladesh.
And the prawns are from Vietnam or one of the other locations. Half the time it's one of the 3, supply and demand, who can fill our supply.
Chinese is always the one country they try not to buy from, but Chinese Crawfish are a lot cheaper than La frozen crawfish. So they bring in the Chinese crap to satisfy the demand, or they just buy it from the other supplier who sells them seafood/fish

Prices this season have been artificially high. And now that they are returning to actual market prices these guys want to tie up? Well tie up for good.

Whose government pays for the Vietnamese fisherman's boats and gas? If US government then why?

Now crawfish is where I can taste the difference. Shrimp I honestly couldn't tell at all. I've always found chinese crawfish to taste muddy.

Seriously?
This isn't just a problem with the Shrimp Industry. Why do you think there are so many Vietnamese stores, cleaners, etc popping up.....all Government assisted.

Some you can, others you can't. It depends on how many chemicals they pumped into them.
You can always tell physically. If every shrimp on your plate is perfect, you're eating imports. Peeled and sized by hand to make every single one look the same. You can do that when have cheap labor.
Mechanically peeled domestic shrimp have imperfections from the process.

Interesting. Like a Sysco shipment?

Really? I'm Vietnamese and I started my business with my own money. I've never heard of such nonsense.
I also brought whole shrimps for $9 a pound so I'm glad the price is dropping

We had an issue with some of the Black Tigers, being Blue tint, it was easy to see. I've stayed away from the 16-what ever shrimp from over seas, i had a bag that wasn't great. I Stick to the EZ-peel prawns. only a couple bucks more per lb and they are already cleaned, just pull the shell off. Nice huge shrimp and very good.
And a huge reason customers want them, is they can get p&d shrimp for less than american whole shrimp.

I guess so.
The point is that everything looks really good. I think you get a better flavor overall with domestic shrimp.
Now, most restaurants cover up a lot of that flavor with seasonings, but gulf shrimp is pretty hard to beat on it's own.
My problem with imports is this:
They dump shrimp here, hurting the wild caught industry. Also, how do you think they get shrimp to survive in such close quarters?
They feed antibiotics to them. Some aren't approved here.
And the last time I checked, the FDA only checks about 2% of what we import.

They are taking a page out of the crawfishermens handbook. I fished a tourney 2 weeks ago out of Empire and the only times I've seen shrimp like that was in Oct when full moon coincided with a cold front. Every time I hit the trolling motor 5-10 would come out the water. They've enjoyed high prices all year, but going out and catching 1k lbs of 16-20s in a couple drags and still expecting 5.50/lb is crazy.

part of it, was Indonesia/Bangladesh had viruses in their ponds, so the American Shrimpers were able to bend people over.
Same shite happened when the East Coast was only ones pulling oysters up, they shoved it up the consumers arse.
Uhh, that's the market at work. It's not shoving anything up consumers' asses. If there is a shortage or a perceived potential shortage price goes up. That's fair.
And, now that the shrimp are plentiful, the prices go down and the shrimpers should quit crying.

Buyers should strike when the price increases the same amount
Posted on 9/5/14 at 9:40 pm to WoWyHi
What was the price last year for comparison? Maybe they were gouging at the start of the season.

You'd be surprised how many restaurants lie about where their seafood comes from.
I've worked in restaurants in some capacity for most of my life. You are 1000% correct.

The Louisiana Shrimp Association called the meeting after the price per pound dropped almost $2 in the last few weeks. Right now, fishermen can get around $1.80 per pound for smaller shrimp from processors. The Louisiana Shrimp Association says shrimpers were getting almost $3 for the same catch at the start of the season.
Almost $3 to $1.80 not $2 a pound, its around a $1 a pound.
